Cornafean Local Notes 24 September 2001

Big Day Out at Football "Sevens"

Last Saturday morning, the Cornafean footballers, along with a large contingent of supporters travelled to Dublin to take part in EBS All Ireland Junior Football Seven-a-side competition, hosted by the St. Jude's GAA club in their grounds in the southside suburb of Templeogue.

In their preliminary group competition, Cornafean faced Leitrim club Gortletteragh, St Mary's of London and St. John's Ballinteer. Each game lasted ten minutes a half. The local lads enjoyed good wins over Gortletteragh and St. Mary's in their opening games but had their hands full in their third match against Ballinteer. The Dublin side led by a couple of points at the break and extended their lead during the second half but Cornafean drew level with a late goal just before the final whistle. This result meant that Cornafean and Ballinteer jointly topped their group table but it was the Dublin side who reached the quarter-final of the competition, as they had amassed more scores over the preceding three matches.

Although Cornafean were somewhat unlucky to exit the competition proper in such a manner, they had the consolation of a place in the quarter-final of the Shield competition, where they met the Wicklow club An Tochar, Roundwood. Cornafean again emerged winners in this game and their opposition in the semi-final was from the home club, St. Jude's. Cornafean started this game well but tired noticeably as the match progressed and were a goal adrift at the final whistle. Thus ended a day of very enjoyable and entertaining football, where Cornafean they showed that they can be a match for any team of their status in the country.

The ten players on the Cornafean panel on Saturday were Rory Geoghegan, Liam Young, Eamon O'Reilly, Eamon Gaffney, John O'Reilly, Brian Doyle, Ciaran McSeain, Art McSeain, Ciaran O'Reilly and Val Sheridan.

The other Cavan representatives in St. Jude's on Saturday were the 1999 Cavan Junior Champions, Drumlane, who progressed to the semi-finals of the main competition before losing narrowly to St. Agnes' club from Antrim.

Whist Drive

The first whist drive of the new season in Cornafean will be held in McSeain's on next Monday week, 1st October at 9pm. All support is welcome.

League Game

On Saturday next, Cornafean play their first game in several months in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 league when they entertain Maghera in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain. The throw-in is scheduled for 5pm. Although Cornafean have had mixed fortunes to date in the earlier rounds of this year's league, they will be hoping for a good result on Saturday.

Charity Night

McSeain's Cornafean is the venue next Saturday night for a charity Irish Night in aid of Third World Development in Ethiopia. A great lineup of entertainment is promised and all support will be welcome towards this worthy cause.

Stone Wall Dedication Ceremony

On Sunday afternoon last, a special ceremony was held at Derrylane Church of Ireland in order to dedicate a fine new stone wall in the grounds of the Church. Dr. Kenneth Clarke, Bishop of Kilmore officiated at the ceremony, which was attended by a large gathering of parishoners.

Cornafean In All Ireland Junior “Sevens”

On Saturday next, the Cornafean footballers will be taking part in the EBS All Ireland Junior Football Seven-a-side competition, hosted by the St. Jude’s GAA club in Templeogue, Dublin. Cornafean qualified for the competition by winning last year’s Cavan Junior Championship and Saturday’s event will involve the 2000 Junior Champions in all 32 counties as well as a number of previous winners of the competition.

This is Cornafean’s first appearance in this competition, which has been held annually since 1991 on the eve of the All Ireland football, hurling and camogie finals. Last year, Sneem from Co. Kerry won the competition for the second year in succession, while in 1997 Tyholland brought the Don Lehane Cup home to Co. Monaghan.

The local team are hoping that as many supporters as possible will make the trip on Saturday to cheer them on in this prestigious competition. The club’s grounds in Templeogue are situated just off the southern end of the M50 motorway, adjacent to the Spawell Golf & leisure Centre. If driving to the venue, take a left turn at the end of the M50 and the first left on that road will bring you to St. Jude’s. The action will get underway at 11am on Saturday morning.

Website Proves a “Hit”

It is now almost four months since the launch of Cornafean Online, the local community website at www.cornafean.com and it has quickly become a great favourite with people at home and overseas. Last week, the number of visitors to the site since its launch reached the 4,000 mark and between 30 and 60 new “hits” are being recorded each day. Users can now access local news and information, (which is updated several times weekly), on the homepage, as well as using it as a base for searching the world wide web and viewing a large archive of local articles and photographs on the site itself.

For the next two weeks, visitors can vote in a special poll to predict who is going to win the forthcoming Cavan County Final between Gowna and Cavan Gaels. Early tallies indicate strong confidence in Gowna’s bid for their three-in-a-row, but undoubtedly the local Gaels supporters will be making their presence felt in the coming days.

The organisers of the site would be delighted to include any articles, notes or photographs (old or new) of local interest to add to the website in the coming weeks. If you have any such items, or suggestions of whatever kind, please contact Jim Hannon, Dessie Harrington or Tommy McGibney.

Pony Drive

The Charity Pony Drive  from Cornafean to Killeshandra, organised last Sunday Crosskeys Pony Trotting Club, was a great success with a total of 24 ponies taking part. Owners brought ponies from all over county Cavan as well as from Co. Fermanagh for the event, which was in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Charity Pony Drive

The Crosskeys Pony Trotting Club have organised a unique Charity Pony Drive for next Sunday, 16th September, from Cornafean to Killeshandra. The group will leave Cornafean at 2.30 pm and will travel via Keevey & Drumbess to Killeshandra where they will parade down the Main Street before turning at the Ulster Bank and returning to Cornafean via the Killeshandra-Cavan road and  Cartwrights rock.

After the party returns to Cornafean at 4.30pm, there will be a Barbeque and Auction with Spot Prizes in McSeains. All proceeds in aid of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.

It is expected that over twenty horses will be taking part on Sunday. Last year's drive was held in aid of Cancer Research and raised over £4,000 in funds for that charity. Hopefully, this year's event will be every bit as successful

Successful Golf Classic

The Crossdoney Development Association Golf Classic was held in Cornafean Golf Course on Saturday last and turned out to be a great success, with over fifty teams taking part. The sunny  conditions were ideal for the occasion and the organisers were delighted that the event ran so smoothly on the day.

On Saturday night, there was a large attendance at a Presentation Social, which was held in McSeains. The event was jointly sponsored by Monery By Products 2000 Ltd, the Shantully Inn and Airpacks Ltd.

Cornafean Local Notes 3 September 2001

Important win for Cornafean

On Saturday evening last, the Cornafean footballers overcame neighbours Killeshandra in a tightly-contested relegation playoff in the Intermediate Championship. The final score was Cornafean 2-8 Killeshandra 0-12. This was a vital win for Cornafean as it means that they have now retained their place in the Intermediate Championship next year.

Thanasie Kaldanis

The decisive scores in this game were a brace of Cornafean goals in the first half. The first came in the 14th minute when Thanasie Kaldanis collected a high incoming ball at the edge of the square, evaded his marker and shot to the back of the net from a very tight angle.

This goal, Thanasie's fourth in as many championship games this year, came at a vital stage of the game for Cornafean, as they trailed by four points to no score. Aided by the breeze, Killeshandra had made all the running in the opening stages. Niall Corcoran opened their account on their first attack after 2 minutes and Justin Hayes followed this with a point from a close-in free, after Cornafean had missed a couple of chances at the other end. J. Sorohan extended Killeshandra's lead with two well-taken points in quick succession.

Cathal Sheridan

It took Cornafean all of 23 minutes to score their first point, which came when Art McSeain converted a 25-yard free. The sides were now level at 1-1 to 0-4. Cornafean's big break came three minutes later. Art McSeain made a fine solo run on the right wing before passing to Brian Doyle in the centre. Doyle sent an inch-perfect ball towards the Killeshandra goal and Cathal Sheridan dramatically pounced on the incoming ball to score the Reds' second goal.

Killeshandra didn't take this setback lying down and almost immediately  scored a goal at the other end. Full-forward Coman Flanagan (who had an otherwise quiet game) out-foxed Rory McSeain and found himself in front of the Cornafean goal with only the 'keeper Pauric Smith to beat. Flanagan opted not to shoot, instead passing to an unmarked Niall Corcoran at the edge of the square. With a goal looking certain, goalie Smith dramatically dived to block Corcoran's point-blank shot and parried the ball to safety. However, the Leaguers kept up the pressure with points from Sorohan and Hayes, leaving the minimum between the sides at the interval.

Killeshandra equalised on the restart with another Sorohan point but Cornafean played their best football of the game in the following ten minutes, when they dominated midfield and scored four points without reply. First up was a well-taken score from Ciaran O'Reilly after Thanasie Kaldanis had made the most of a long ball from Brian Doyle. A minute later, Art McSeain made no mistake from a 20-yard free and after shooting wide from an acute angle, the same player added a great point from 40 yards out in the 7th minute. Ciaran O'Reilly also played a pivotal role in the Reds' next score, which Ciaran McSeain put over the bar.

Earlier the game had been held up for a short period in a bizarre incident when a heifer strayed onto the field of play. Thankfully the umpires were quick on their feet and dealt effectively with the incursion before referee Packie Smith let the beast off with a caution.

Art McSeain

Killeshandra introduced Carl Reilly into the fray towards the end of the third quarter as Art McSeain narrowly missed another scoring chance when his well-taken effort hit the upright. At the other end, Gary Fay burst through the Cornafean defence to score a fine point and further scores from Coman Flanagan and Justin Hayes left the minimum between the sides - 2-5 to 0-10 - with ten minutes remaining. Ciaran McSeain then lifted the siege with a Cornafean point before Carl Reilly replied likewise for the Leaguers.

In the latter stages of the game, Cornafean held on grimly to their lead and points from Art and Ciaran McSeain extended the margin to three points. In the dying minutes a Coman Flanagan point reduced the deficit to two and this helped set up a nailbiting finish. The Leaguers searched in vain for a winning goal but a determined Cornafean defence held their ground and there was relief for Cornafean when the final whistle was blown
