2002 Cavan Division 3 League Quarter Final

 Cornafean v Killeshandra

19 October 2002

Cornafean 4-10 Killeshandra 0-5.

Cornafean booked their place in the semi-finals of the Lakeside Manor Division 3 League with an assured victory over a disappointing Killeshandra side in last Saturday’s quarter-final match in Michael Cully Park, Arva. Although played in ideal conditions on a well-maintained and freshly-mowed surface on a crisp but dry evening, the match never lived up to the expectations of the sizeable attendance.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The winners were in clear control for most of the hour, and led by six points at the interval despite wasting numerous scoring chances in the first half. Although Killeshandra came into the game for a period in the third quarter, Cornafean maintained their hold on proceedings before finally pulling away in the latter stages with three goals which put a flattering gloss on their final winning margin.

Unfortunately the match started on an unsavoury note with several instances of dangerous tackles and rough play recorded in the opening minutes after Art McSeain had opened the scoring for Cornafean with a point from a long-range free. Referee Michael Henry dealt swiftly and firmly with each transgression, issuing three red cards and several yellows in the opening quarter. Cornafean’s Ciaran McSeain was first to be sent off, after 8 minutes, and he was joined shortly afterwards on the sideline by Killeshandra defenders Dermot Corr and Derek Woods. Thankfully the decisive action of the referee succeeded in imposing order and discipline on the game and the early offences were not repeated.

With Brian Doyle dominating midfield, Cornafean were much the stronger side in those opening stages but their forwards failed to make any impression on the scoreboard and Killeshandra were back level on 16 minutes when Karl Reilly opened their account from a 30-yard free. Cornafean’s first big break came in the 23rd minute. After a swift Cornafean movement upfield, a pass from Cathal Sheridan found Thanasie Kaldanis in front of goal and the full-forward sent a powerful shot to the net. Cornafean piled on the pressure with two unanswered points from Art McSeain and another from Liam Duignan to leave them 1-4 to 0-1 ahead at half-time.

Cornafean started off the second half on a strong note but they again wasted a number of scoring chances before Art McSeain sent over a great point from the left wing after five minutes. His colleague Thanasie Kaldanis continued to cause all sorts of problems for a pressurised Killeshandra defence. When the full-forward was fouled in front of goal in the 8th minute, the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty, but Killeshandra enjoyed a temporary reprieve when Pauric Smith drilled his strong shot wide of the right post.

Cornafean bounced back quickly with yet another point from Art McSeain. Karl Reilly responded likewise from a free for Killeshandra before a good point from Justin Hayes cut the Killeshandra deficit to six points. At this stage, a Killeshandra revival seemed likely but Cornafean battled strongly and Art McSeain once again extended their lead after some good work by Michael McGibney.

Cornafean’s second goal finally put the game beyond Killeshandra’s reach as the game entered the final quarter. Young Liam Duignan shook off his marker in front of goal and took a pass from Thanasie Kaldanis and shipped a heavy challenge before shooting to the left corner of the Killeshandra net. Now leading by 2-7 to 0-3, Cornafean were in full command, despite two further Killeshandra points from the boot of Karl Reilly.

Substitute Gerry McInytre raised a mighty Cornafean cheer in scoring his side’s third goal on 20 minutes and the one-way traffic continued when a fisted ball from Thanasie Kaldanis produced Cornafean’s fourth goal, after Brian Doyle’s expertly-taken “45” had rebounded off the crossbar. Two further Art McSeain points and a late score from Cathal Sheridan rounded off a convincing victory for Cornafean.

 Cornafean v Swanlinbar

5 October 2002

2002 Intermediate Championship

Cornafean 0-14 Swanlinbar 1-6.

Cornafean secured their place in Division 2 and the Intermediate Championship for 2003 with a decisive five-point victory over Swanlinbar in Devlin Park, Killeshandra on Saturday evening. With only one victory from three previous outings in the Intermediate Relegation League, Cornafean badly needed to win this game and their keen determination and hunger for victory was a decisive factor in this game.

The winners started the game well and, with Art McSeain to the fore in most of their attacking movements, Cornafean went into an early 0-4 to 0-0 lead. However Swanlinbar fought their way back into contention and a series of points brought them  back to level pegging at 0-4 each, midway through the first half. Cornafean responded well with three unanswered points before Art McSeain extended their lead to four on the stroke of half time. Thus Cornafean led by 0-8 to 0-4 at the break.

Shortly after the restart, Art McSeain sent Cornafean five points clear with a well-taken point but Swanlinbar were soon back in the game when their full-forward Paul McGovern scored an opportunist goal, which took a deflection off a Cornafean defender before hitting the net. Now only two points adrift, Swanlinbar were once again in a strong position to take control of the game, but Cornafean’s stronger workrate paid dividends and Art McSeain soon extended their lead with a series of points. The Cornafean corner forward finished with a personal tally of ten points and despite a couple of late Swanlinbar scores, the West Cavan men were unable to battle their way back into contention.

 Cornafean v Lavey

21 July 2002

2002 Intermediate Championship

Cornafean 0-15 Lavey 0-13.

Cornafean recorded their first win of their 2002 Intermediate Championship campaign on last Saturday evening when they edged out Lavey in an entertaining game in Ballinagh, on a scoreline of 0-15 to 0-13.

The winners enjoyed a dream start when they outgunned Lavey with a storming display in the opening quarter. With Brian Doyle in command at centrefield, the Cornafean forwards enjoyed an abundance of possession and they put themselves in the driving seat with a six-point lead before Seamus Donohoe opened Lavey’s account in the fifteenth minute. Art McSeain was central to Cornafean’s early dominance, and the talented full-forward scored five points during this spell with the other score coming from Liam Duignan.

Lavey battled hard to bring themselves back into contention and five points from young Sean Maguire before half time left them trailing by just two at the break, with the interval scoreline reading Cornafean 0-8 Lavey 0-6.

A point from Val Sheridan gave Cornafean a strong boost just after the restart but Lavey came back strongly with two points from Seamus Donohoe by the eighth minute. With only a point now separating the sides, the game was really in the balance at this stage and both sides dug deep to produce an nailbiting fifteen-minute spell of play, at the end of which Lavey led by 0-13 to 0-12, with seven minutes left. The five Lavey scores during this period came from Shane Maguire, Cathal Donohoe, Paul King, Seamus Donohoe and Gavin Smith. At the other end, two Brian Doyle points and another from Liam Duignan kept Cornafean in the hunt.

Cornafean had the better of the exchanges in the final minutes. First came the equaliser from Art McSeain, then a dramatic lead point from an acute angle near the corner flag from Liam Duignan. Art McSeain put Cornafean two points clear with a minute remaining and although Lavey battled hard in the closing stages they were unable to save the game.

Cornafean v Mountnugent

Sat 30th June 2002

Result Cornafean 1-10 Mountnugent 1-7

Cornafean continued their recent strong run in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 League with close victory over visitors Mountnugent in ideal conditions in Cornafean Park on Saturday evening last. Both sides contributed greatly to an entertaining and free-flowing game which ultimately could have gone either way.

The visitors had a dream start when Bernard Lee made maximum use of a skilful cross from Eurick Reilly to score a Mountnugent goal after only five minutes of play. Points from Enda Fitzpatrick and Aiden McCabe put Mountnugent into a commanding 1-2 to 0-1 lead by the eleventh minute with Cornafean’s solitary score at that stage coming courtesy of Thanasie Kaldanis. A fine point from Art McSeain cut Cornafean’s deficit to three points and the Reds drew level on 17 minutes when Thanasie Kaldanis scored an opportunist goal for the home side.

Boosted by the goal, Cornafean began to dominate with unanswered points from Brian Doyle, Damien O’Rourke and Val Sheridan, before Sean Brady responded with a Mountnugent point against the run of play on 23 minutes. Almost immediately, Eamon O’Reilly scored a wonderful point for Cornafean after cutting through the Mountnugent defence with a trademark solo run. Now leading by 1-6 to 1-3, Cornafean had a chance to put the game beyond the visitors’ reach when Thanasie Kaldanis put the ball once again into the Mountnugent net but the goal was disallowed for a square infringement. Mountnugent bounced back immediately with a point from Eurick Reilly and a further point from Dermot Brady left a single point between the sides at the interval.

Mountnugent had the better of the exchanges in the early minutes of the first half but their forwards recorded a succession of wides and it was Cornafean’s Thanasie Kaldanis who opened the scoring at the other end after a wonderful solo run upfield by Eamon Gaffney. The wides continued at both ends but as the game progressed Cornafean extended their lead with points from Art McSeain and Brian Doyle. With five minutes left, a Liam Duignan point put Cornafean five points ahead and a late Mountnugent resurgence which yielded points from Eurick Reilly and Enda Fitzpatrick was not enough to deny the home side victory.

Cornafean v Maghera

Division 3    13th April 2002

Result Cornafean 0-11 Maghera 1-8

Maghera and visitors Cornafean shared the points in a tightly-fought Lakeside Manor Division 3 clash in Maghera on Saturday evening last. The home side dominated for long periods of the first half and were full value for their four-point lead at half-time. Cornafean recovered well after the break and there was very little between the teams in the tension-packed closing stages.

Maghera got off to a flying start with two well-taken scores from full-forward James Brady in the opening minutes, before Brian Doyle opened Cornafean’s account on 6 minutes. Midfielder Joseph Fitzsimons put Maghera 0-3 to 0-1 ahead before Cornafean wasted a number of good scoring chances at the other end. Val Sheridan pointed for the Reds on 11 minutes but amazingly both sides failed to score for almost 20 minutes. The next score, when it came, was a decisive one for Maghera as the visitors conceded a needless penalty in the 29th minute. From the penalty, Joseph Fitzsimons hit a rasping shot, which shaved the underside of the crossbar before reaching the net.

Cornafean responded well on the restart with Art McSeain and Val Sheridan both scoring from frees but Fergus McHugh steadied Maghera with a point against the run of play. Cornafean’s resurgence continued with two Art McSeain points and a further score from Sean Martin left the sides level at 1-4 to 0-7. Martin McGrath edged Maghera ahead once again only for Eamon O’Reilly to convert a free at the other end. With eight minutes remaining, Cornafean held what seemed to be a decisive two-point lead, both scores coming from Art McSeain, but Maghera refused to die and two points from Fergus McHugh saw them draw level once more. Joseph Fitzsimons scored a mighty point from over 40 yards out to give the home side a dramatic lead in the dying minutes. Cornafean responded in determined fashion, and when Art McSeain won a close-in free in injury time, the same player had little difficulty in sending the ball over the bar, to level the scores for the final time.

Division 3 League 2002 - Cornafean v Templeport

Saturday 30th March 2002

Cornafean 3-5 Templeport 0-10

Cornafean recorded their second win on the trot in the Division 3 League when they defeated Templeport in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain. It was Cornafean’s goalscoring ability that proved the difference between the teams. Templeport were enjoying the better of the exchanges in the first half before they were rocked by two Cornafean goals, from Rory Geoghegan and Cathal Sheridan respectively, and a third Cornafean goal just after half-time put the home side in a commanding lead which they never relinquished.

Cornafean started brightly when Val Sheridan opened their account in the second minute after Eamon O’Reilly and Brian Doyle had combined well to prise open the visitors’ defence. Templeport were off the mark within sixty seconds when Eamon Heery sent a wella-aimed ball. McGovern continued to make an impact with two further unanswered points to leave his side 0-3 to 0-1 ahead by the 10th minute.

However, Cornafean got a mighty boost on the quarter-hour when Rory Geoghegan scored a great goal from point-blank range, after combining well with Sean Martin in collecting an incoming ball from Eamon Gaffney. Templeport responded with a point from a 40 yards free from Shane Maguire, but the visitors suffered another setback on 22 minutes when Cathal Sheridan scored Cornafean’s goal, fisting an incoming ball from Brian Doyle into the back of the net. Buoyed by this double boost, Cornafean kept the pressure on with a point from Ciaran McSeain, to leave the score 2-2 to 0-4 in their favour at the break.

The second half started in dramatic fashion with Cornafean’s Thanasie Kaldanis narrowly missing a goal chance when his powerful narrow-angle shot sailed across the goal area before going wide. A couple of minutes later, Kaldanis was causing further problems for the Templeport defence. Now seven points adrift, Templeport responded with a point from Shane Maguire and this was followed by a dramatic incident where the same player drew on a loose ball in a crowded Cornafean goalmouth, only to see his shot fly over the crossbar. Cornafean re-asserted their dominance with two points from Ciaran O’Reilly and Sean Martin but Templeport kept the pressure up with two further points from Shane Maguire.

With ten minutes left, some good defensive work by Cornafean prevented what looked like a certain goal for Templeport, with goalie Paraic Smith and corner-back Ollie Gormly both making fine saves under pressure. Eamon Gaffney steadied Cornafean with a great point from the right wing but the home side suffered a blow with an accidental injury to midfielder Ciaran O’Reilly, which caused a long stoppage in play. Templeport finished strongly with two further Shane Maguire points from frees but Cornafean were still four points clear at the final whistle.

Division 3 League 2002 - Cornafean v Kill

Sunday 24th March 2002

Cornafean 1-5 Kill 0-7

Cornafean made a winning start to their 2002 campaign in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 League when they recorded a narrow, and somewhat fortunate victory at home to Kill. A goal in the early minutes of the game from Cathal Sheridan turned out to be a decisive score for the winners, who never trailed thereafter despite a brave effort from a gallant Kill team.

After their impressive win last weekend over Templeport, Kill started the game in some style with county star Pierce McKenna making an immediate impact at midfield, but the visitors’ forwards spurned several scoring chances in the opening quarter. In contrast, Cornafean made much better use of much more limited possession. Ciaran O’Reilly opened the scoring for the Reds with a great point from a 40 yards free in the 10th minute and the home side got a great boost a few minutes later when a long ball from Eamon Gaffney found the dangerous Thanasie Kaldanis close to goal. Kaldanis quickly passed to the incoming Cathal Sheridan, who shook off his marker before shooting to the net.

Now four points adrift, Kill responded well to this setback and young Niall McCaffrey opened their account when he finished a nice solo run with a well-taken point from the left wing. A minute later, a foul on McCaffrey yielded a close-in free for Pierce McKenna, which the countyman converted with ease. By the 20th minute, there was only a point between the sides as Damien Forster sent over a great point from 35 yards out. A great save from Cornafean keeper Pauric Smith denied Kill’s Joe McQuillan what appeared to be a certain goal a couple of minutes later, but Kill’s dominance continued with a Barry Crudden point from play.

With Brian Doyle and Ciaran O’Reilly combining well in a crowded midfield sector, Cornafean had the better of the exchanges in the latter minutes of the first half, scoring points from Ciaran McSeain from play, and Ciaran O’Reilly from a free, to leave the Reds 1-3 to 0-4 ahead at the break.

In contrast to the highly entertaining first half, the second half was a somewhat scrappy affair, with both sides struggling to make the most of the difficult conditions. Barry Crudden brightened Kill’s hopes 4 minutes after the restart with a great long-range point after a period of slack play but Cornafean replied quickly when Ciaran O’Reilly converted a 40 yards free after a foul on Brian Doyle. Pierce McKenna reduced Kill’s deficit to the minimum when he scored a point from a free on 12 minutes, leaving the scoreline 1-4 to 0-6 in favour of the hosts. An embattled Cornafean defended their slender lead in determined fashion, and Kill failed to score for the next fifteen minutes, with Eamon O’Reilly and Rory McSeain in particularly impressive form in the hosts’ backline. With five minutes left, centre-back O’Reilly effectively clinched the game for Cornafean when he ventured forward from defence, took a pass from his brother Ciaran, evaded two opponents on a neat solo run, and shot a great point from 25 yards. Kill responded with a late point from Pierce McKenna, but their efforts to find an equaliser were in vain as Cornafean grimly hung on to their narrow lead to take the prized league points.
