The Pony Club
The headquarters of the Co. Cavan Pony Club has been located in Cornafean since 1988 when an all-weather training arena was made available by local shopkeeper Tom McSeain.
Except for the winter months the club meets here regularly for its training sessions known as rallies. Usually there are four riding groups graded by ability. While two groups practice the riding skills in dressage and showjumping the other riders have a lesson in stable management.
On the first week in July each year, members and their ponies camp for a week’s instruction and fun at Farnham Estate beside Cavan town, courtesy of Lord and Lady Farnham. The club has developed cross-country courses and stabling at this venue and daily instruction is given by professional instructors in all aspects of riding and dressage, showjumping, cross-country and care of pony and riding tack. Social events such as a barbeque are also part of a
camp.
The Co. Cavan club is part of the Irish Pony Club which has branches in all parts of the country and takes part in dressage, showjumping, hunter trials, horse trials and tetratlons (shooting, swimming riding and running cross-country) at local and national level. The Irish Pony Club is affiliated to the international Pony Club, which is represented in twenty-two countries worldwide with a membership of over seventy thousand making it the largest association of riders in the world. Irish riders take part in the various international Pony Club events and friendly visits are also organised to clubs in other countries.
Each local branch is under the leadership of the District Commissioner, known in the club as the D.C. The D.C. of the Co. Cavan club is Jim Hannon. The D.C. is assisted by a Secretary, Treasurer and PRO and further committee members. Professional instructors are employed for all tuition.
The annual membership fee is currently £30.00 and there are currently 35 members in the local club. As members progress, tests or exams are taken and certificates of efficiency are awarded.
