Cornafean Notes 26 October 2004

Football Wins

Well done to the Cornafean/Killeshandra Under 21 footballers who defeated Denn in the first round of the Cavan Under-21 Championship in Cornafean Park on Saturday last. Despite fielding a young team, many of whom are still playing in minor grade, the locals played very well on the day in what was a tough but sporting encounter and were full value for their 1-5 to 0-6 win. Meanwhile on the Bank Holiday Monday, the Cornafean senior footballers enjoyed a good win over opponents Cuchullains in the Division 2 Intermediate League. The Cornafean lads put in a strong showing in the first half against the recent Championship semi-finalists and led by five points at the break. The locals had to work hard to maintain their lead in the second half and were delighted to emerge six points clear at the final whistle. The final score was Cornafean 1-13 Cuchullains 0-10. Among Cornafean’s best players on the day were Rory McSeain, Andrew Smith, Eamon O’Reilly, Eamon Gaffney and the midfield partnership of Val Sheridan and Ciaran Martin. With two games remaining in this year’s league, Cornafean are currently placed just above the relegation zone and they will need to repeat their good form of last Monday in their remaining two matches to ensure their survival in Division Two for next year.

Cornafean Notes 5 October 2004

Success for young footballers

Well done to all the young local footballers who have done Cornafean proud in the concluding stages of this years Cavan Bord Peil na nOg and Youth Board football competitions. Last Saturday week was a day to remember for the Cornafean/Killeshandra minors who took the Division 2 minor championship crown by beating opponents Killygarry in the final played in Ramor Park, Virginia. The Cornafean/Killeshandra win is all the more notable as they were only promoted to this grade after winning the Division 3 minor league final earlier in the summer.

The day was one to remember for the Cornafean and Killeshandra areas as the clubs joint forces were also represented in the under 16 final which preceded the minor game. Unfortunately on this occasion, their opponents Shercock were too strong for the local lads and ran out deserving winners.

Last Saturday it was the turn of the Cornafean Under 14s to take centre stage as they took on Knockbride in their divisional semi-final again in Virginia. The local boys gave everything on the day but in wet and heavy conditions, the stronger Knockbride team had most of the aces and so qualified for the final.

We congratulate all the footballers involved and commend their mentors for their great work throughout the year.

Its once again the time of year when clubs within Cavan and throughout the country prepare for Scor na nOg. This year’s first round competitions will take place in November and are eagerly awaited.
