A Halloween Dance will be held in the Cavan Crystal Hotel on this Friday 24th October in aid of Kilmore National School. There will be musical entertainment by Smitty. As well as raising much-needed funds for the School, this promises to be a very enjoyable and entertaining social evening for everyone in the locality. All support would be greatly appreciated.
There was widespread sadness in the locality recently on the death of Mr. Sean Sheridan who died recently in New York. A native of Drumcrow, Sean emigrated to Canada as a young man and worked there for some years before moving subsequently to New York where he ran a successful pub business for some years. The news of his untimely passing after a short illness was met with deep regret among his many friends in the locality. His brother Fr. Tom officiated at his funeral which took place in New York on Saturday 11th October. On the same evening, a large congregation of mourners attended a Memorial Mass for him in St Felim's Church, Ballinagh. We extend our deepest sympathies to his mother Bridget, wife Kathleen, daughters Kathleen, Sheila and Eileen, brothers Paddy, Gerry, Charlie, Fr. Tom and Eamon and other relatives.
There was deep regret among the local community this week on the death of Mrs. Anne McDermott (nee McGibney), who died in Roscommon on Saturday last after a long illness. A native of Corlis, Anne moved in Scramoge Co Roscommon when she married Martin McDermott and over the years she always maintained very close links with friends, family and community affairs in the locality. She worked for many years as a poultry instructor and she became well known in this capacity throughout the North Midland region. She will be remembered as a very obliging, friendly, hardworking and selfless woman. We extend our deepest sympathy to her daughters Josepha and Catherine, sons Michael, Ian and Martin, brother Willie, nieces, nephews and other relatives. There were large attendances at the Removal of her remains to Scramoge Church on Monday and at her Funeral Mass on Tuesday morning.
The local Vintage Tractor Club in Cornafean are holding a meeting this Friday night, 10th October, in McSeains at 9.30pm, to organise this weekend’s tractor run to the Cavan Equestrian Centre. All members are asked to attend.
People who are interested in taking part in a short sketch for a concert in the Lavey Inn in late November are asked to attend a meeting in McSeains on next Tuesday night, 14th October at 9.00 pm All members and non-members are welcome. A large group of club members recently took part in a very enjoyable 2-day tour to the North Connacht region where they stayed in the well-known Ridgepool Hotel, Ballina and visited a number of tourist attractions in the locality. A good time was had by all.
On Sunday last, large numbers of local people were in Kingspan Breffni Park for the Intermediate Championship Final between our neighbours Ballinagh and Denn. In recent weeks, there was strong local interest in Ballinagh’s exciting journey to the final and the decider itself turned out to be a cracker with Denn taking the honours by a two point margin. Despite their narrow defeat on Sunday, the Ballinagh lads can be happy that they did themselves proud in contributing so handsomely to such an enjoyable final. To Denn, we extend our most sincere congratulations on their victory, which was achieved after a succession of narrow defeats in recent years. The phrase “overdue success” is one that is commonly coined whenever Championship victories are discussed – in Denn’s case the term is particularly apt. No doubt they will make a strong impact in Senior ranks next year while Ballinagh will once again be among the frontrunners in the Intermediate field, which will also feature local rivals Cornafean and Lacken – plenty of ingredients there for summer spice in 2004!
The Autumn season of Whist Drives has recently re-started in Cornafean and the next Whist Drive will be in McSeains on next Monday night, 13th October. All are welcome and all support is greatly appreciated.
Catherina McKiernan achieved another milestone in her recent comeback to top-level athletics action on Sunday last when she finished second to Sonia O’Sullivan in the BUPA Great Ireland Run in thePhoenix Park, Dublin. Catherina finished the race in a time of 33 minutes 4 seconds, some 40 seconds behind the Cobh athlete. This was one of Catherina’s best competitive performances in some years and she is now looking forward to the forthcoming European Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh next December. We wish her every continued success.
