Congratulations to Neal Tully, Gartbrattan and Deirdre Donohoe, Ballymachugh, who were married on Saturday last in Ballynarry Church. A reception was later held in Crover House, Mountnugent.

Next weekend, the Cornafean footballers will take on visitors Lavey in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 league. The game has been provisionally fixed for next Saturday, 20th October with the throw-in at 4.30pm. While Cornafean are well off the pace in the promotion stakes as the league enters its final stages, this particular fixture promises to be a particularly attractive one, bringing together two teams who produced a proverbial thriller earlier this year in the Intermediate Championship. On that occasion, Lavey enjoyed the better of the exchanges for most of this game and led by eight points at one stage but Cornafean produced a storming finish in the final ten minutes in which they scored three dramatic goals before the game finished level. If this weekend's league encounter is half as exciting, then the local supporters will surely have a treat on their hands.
There will be a Table Quiz this Friday night, 19 October in the Millennium Tavern, Ballinagh in aid of the Ballinagh Christmas Street Lighting Fund
There has been widespread and deep sadness in the locality following the recent tragic death of Enda Walsh, Coronea, who died on Saturday 6th October following a road accident. Enda, who was 21 years old, was a very popular and well-liked young man. Although quiet by nature, he was a very friendly, warm and obliging person, who always had a pleasant smile for eveyone he met.
Enda was educated at Coronea N.S. and at Moyne Community School, following which he worked up to the time of his death with Woodford Timber Products Ltd in Doogarry, where he was a valued and popular worker. His untimely death at such a young age has come as a great shock to eveyone who had the privilege to know him. The esteem in which he was held by the wider community was evidenced by the huge attendances at the Removal of his remains to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Coronea on Tuesday evening and at the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.
We extend our deepest sympathy to his heartbroken parents Jim and Philomena, his sisters Caroline and Michelle, and to his uncles aunts and other relatives.
Congratulations to our local champion Irish Dancer Yvonne McNerney who recently competed in the British Nationals Championship in Manchester. Yvonne was placed in the top six dancers out of a record total of 120 competitors from England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Yvonne's next big event will be the British Opens to be held in Bristol at the end of October. We wish her continued success. Watch this space!!!!
The recent announcement by Creighton Developments Ltd of Enniskillen that they have applied for planning permission for a large development of 78 housing units in Crossdoney has been causing much debate in the locality in recent days. The development, which has a budget of £10m has the potential to increase the population of the village by a multiple of ten.
The
entire development is earmarked for a ten-acre site in the village, on which is
currently situated an old residence, woodland and river. Since the plans were
outlined at a recent public meeting, a number of locals have
expressed concerns that this type of development may destroy the unique
character and heritage of the village. A number of objections have already been
lodged with Cavan County Council.
Obviously,
Crossdoney and its hinterland could benefit greatly from some development as it
is a cliché to say that the area has been largely bypassed by the elusive
"Celtic Tiger." Certainly, there is much potential in the area with
many local amenities nearby such as Killykeen Forest Park and Cornafean Golf
Course, not to mention the Cornafean Sports Hall currently under construction.
Whether this particluar proposal is what Crossdoney needs at this point in time
remains to be seen........
We extend our deepest sympathy to Tom O’Reilly, Lahard on the death of his brother Pat who died recently in England.
There was deep sadness and shock in the locality last weekend on the tragic death following a road accident of 21-year old Enda Walsh, Coronea. We extend our deepest sympathy to his family.
On
Sunday last, the Cornafean footballers enjoyed a dramatic win over visitors
Maghera in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 league. After a rollercoaster game,
Cornafean finally had three points to spare, on a scoreline of Cornafean 2-17
Maghera 4-8. Cornafean dominated proceedings for almost all the first half and,
with their forwards in good scoring form, were 0-10 to 0-1 ahead after 25
minutes. However the youthful Maghera team made the most of a couple of scoring
opportunities just before half time and scored two goals and a point without
reply to cut Cornafean’s lead two points, 0-10 to 2-2 at half time. Maghera
went on to score two more goals in the second half and seemed to have Cornafean
on the rack when they took the lead as the game entered its final phase.
However, Cornafean came back strongly with two fisted goals from Neal Tully and
Art McSeain, and so the Reds held on to deny the visitors the league.

James Duignan in action for Garrycastle |
There was keen local interest in the recent Westmeath County Football Final in Cusack Park, Mullingar as James Duignan, a son of Gus Duignan, formerly of Farranseer, played a starring role for Garrycastle who won their first ever title by beating pre-match favourites Tyrellspass by 1-9 to 0-11. James, who is 20 years old, lined out at midfield for Garrycastle where he was partnered by Westmeath county star David O’Shaughnessy. Their combined dominance at centrefield was a huge factor in Garrycastle’s surprise win. James has already won county medals with Garrycastle at under-16, minor, and under-21 levels in the past and he represented Leinster in 1998 in the minor Compromise Rules games against Australia. His club, Garrycastle, who are based on the eastern outskirts of Athlone, were formed only 20 years ago and since then have made huge strides in Westmeath football, particularly at underage level. The Garrycastle team manager this year was one of our own neighbours, Martin McCabe, Knockaughey, Corlismore, for many years a stalwart on Gowna football teams. This was Martin’s first ever managerial assignment and his success in bringing this young Garrycastle team to a county title could well be the start of a glittering managerial career. We congratulate both James and Martin on their wonderful achievement.
The Cornafean Vintage Ploughing Association held a very enjoyable Dance and Presentation on last Friday night in McSeain's. The guest of honour on the night was Mr. Seamus Hayes, Chairman of Self Help International, who traveled from Fethard, Co. Tipperary for the occasion. Mr. Hayes was presented with a cheque for £3,000 being the proceeds of the recent in Cornafean. This money will be spent on several of Self Help’s development projects in the Third World. A large number of photographs of the various activities during the Vintage Ploughing and Field Day can now be viewed on the Cornafean website on the internet, at the address www.cornafean.com

Congratualtions to Cavan Gaels, who became the new Cavan Senior Football Champions by beating Gowna in the final in Breffni Park on Sunday by 0-15 to 1-7. The Gaels have been knocking on the door several times in recent years and were full value for their win against a Gowna side that have contributed so much to Cavan football in recent years and undoubtedly will do so again in the near future.
Thanks to everyone who voted in the special www.cornafean.com internet poll to predict the winners of this game. In the end, a total of forty people voted, with twenty correctly predicting a Gaels win while another twenty plumped for Gowna. Apologies to those who were unable to register their votes in the past few days due to a techncial "gremlin in the works".
Well done to our friends in Drumgoon who took the Junior title by beating
Kildallan in a close Junior final.
The ghost of Eamon Gaffney's wonder
goal of the 2000 Junior Final was undoubtedly hovering in the minds of many
Drumgoon folk as the East Cavan side held a slender one-point lead as the game
entered injury time. However, the Drumgoon lads were in better luck this year as
they scored a goal and two points in that injury-time period to record a
six-point winning margin against a somewhat unlucky Kildallan team.
