On Monday evening next, a new book entitled “All Lovely Kilmore- Its Churches, People and Heritage” by Ms. Wendy Swan, Monery will be launched at a special reception in Kilmore Parochial Hall. The launch starts at 8.00pm and everyone is welcome to attend.
There is sure to be keen local interest in the book, which extends to 120 pages with over 70 photographs of local people and places.
On Sunday next, the Cornafean senior footballers will play Drumalee in the semi-final of the 2002 Lakeside Manor Division 3 League. This fixture was originally scheduled to be played a fortnight ago, but was postponed as a result of the recent inclement weather.
This semi-final is an important game for the Cornafean team and management as they are anxious to finish their 2002 football campaign on a high note with an appearance in the league final. They will face tough opposition against a young Drumalee team which recently beat Cornafean in the final round of the Intermediate Relegation League last month. Earlier this year, the local team emerged narrow winners after an entertaining league game against the same opposition. We wish the local lads every success on Sunday.
We also congratulate our friends in Butlersbridge on their victory in the Cavan Junior Championship Final on Sunday last. The ‘Bridge have been one of the leading Junior clubs in the county over the years and came very close to winning the title on several occasions in the past few years. Their victory on Sunday will finally make up for the many disappointments they have experienced in the past. Commiserations to Kildallan on their narrow defeat in Sunday’s final. Like Butlersbridge, Kildallan have been unlucky not to win a Championship title on at least one occasion in recent years, not least in 2000 when they went down to Cornafean by a single point in that year’s semi-final. Their young squad have plenty of football talent in their ranks and despite the disappointment on Sunday, they will surely bounce back and make the big breakthrough in the not-too-distant future.
Coronea ICA are holding a fundraising Whist Drive in McSeain’s on next Monday, 25th November. All proceeds will go to Bóthar, the Third World development agency that provides poverty-stricken families with means to solve their problems permanently. Bóthar works in 19 countries worldwide. It gives a poor family a cow, a goat or a flock of chickens, together with training and veterinary support which enables them to look after it properly. Over time, through these living gifts, families and communities become self-reliant and are able to lift themselves out of poverty.
All support towards this cause would be greatly appreciated.
There was widespread sadness and regret in the local area recently on the death of Mr. Seamus (Seamie) Sheridan, Drumcrow, who died in the Mater Private Hospital, Dublin on Friday 15th November.
Although Seamie had suffered some ill-health in the past, his unexpected death came as a great shock to everyone who knew him. He will be remembered by his many friends as a very decent, friendly, obliging and popular man. He had a great interest in sport, particularly in Gaelic Football and hunting. A talented footballer, he starred for Cornafean for many years from the mid-1960s to the mid-1970’s and he was especially noted as a strong and powerful midfielder, one of the club’s leading players of his generation. Down through the years, he was a strong and loyal supporter for Cornafean, and also of the Cavan county teams.
He was employed for a number of years with Killeshandra Co-op and later took up the franchise of the Grousehall Creamery Branch Store, which he operated successfully up to his death. In his business, he was highly regarded by his many customers for his obliging and helpful nature and he was always willing to help others whenever necessary.
Members of Cornafean GAA club, and of the local Fine Gael organisation formed a guard of honour at the removal of his remains to Ballinagh Chapel on last Sunday evening. There were large attendances at both the Removal, and at the Funeral Mass on Monday. Deepest sympathy is extended to his mother Bridget, wife Angela, sons Andrew, Barry and James, brothers Paddy, Gerry, Sean, Charlie, Fr. Tom and Eamon, sisters Anne, Margaret, Christina and Julia and other relatives

Congratulations to Helen Cartwright, Drumora, who was successful in the recent Irish Dancing Ulster Championships, which were held in Newcastle, Co. Down last week. Helen finished in 8th place overall in her category having danced the reel, the hornpipe and the piper. Helen’s place in the top 10 means that she qualified for the World Irish Dancing Championship next year.
Along with Ciara Bannon, Dingins, Helen teamed up with Roisin Sheridan, Kildallan and Sandra Walsh, Stradone and they finished 6th in the Girls 4-Hand Reel.
The Mixed Team consisted of Helen Cartwright, Roisin Sheridan, Mark Galligan, Crosserlough and Shane Murtagh, Bruskey and they finished in 3rd place in the Mixed 4-Hand Reel.
All are members of the Paschal Lyons School of Dancing. We congratulate them on their great success and wish them every success in the future.
The
Vintage Tractor Club of Cornafean was officially launched on the Bank Holiday
Sunday with a very successful vintage tractor run display outside McSeains. The
launch was performed by Councillor Charlie Boylan, who is well known among all
tractor enthusiasts in the region, and by local community and charity activist
Dessie Harrington.
On
Sunday morning a total of forty club members drove their vintage tractors on a
twenty-mile circuit around the Cornafean area. The large turnout was quite an
achievement for the organisers given the terribly inclement weather conditions
of heavy rain and gale force winds. Later in the afternoon, a sizeable
attendance gathered in marginally better weather for the tractor display and
launch of the club.
Addressing
the gathering following the launch, Charlie Boylan said that it was a great
honour for him to launch the club. He praised the efforts of the club committee
for their work in providing a valuable link between the present day and the
historic heritage of yesteryear. He also praised the local people for their
enthusiastic support for charitable causes, especially the efforts of the
Vintage Ploughing Association for the Self Help Third World development, and
Dessie Harrington’s fundraising journey from Malin to Mizen earlier this year.
Dessie
Harrington told the assembled gathering that he was delighted to be associated
with the new Vintage Tractor Club, which has gone from strength to strength
since it was first formed on September 13th. He paid tribute to the
committee, Chairman Sean Kelly, Secretary Philip Miney, Treasurer Seamus Laheen
and PRO John O’Donoghue for their trojan efforts in successfully forming the
new club in such a short period.
The
launch was followed by a social function in McSeains during which the large
attendance were treated to a feast of entertainment, including a charity
auction, a bagpipe performance by Sean Kelly, storytelling by Sean Masterson and
other attractions.
Last
week, the local Corlis and Coronea National Schools were both to the fore in the
Inter-school Table Quiz held in Ballinagh. After a very enjoyable competition,
the Corlis team finished in first place, and Coronea ended in third place.
At
the end of the quiz, the Corlis NS team who produced a great display in
correctly answering 86 of 100 questions, were presented with a special Plaque
for First Prize. At the end of the quiz, Coronea were only two points behind on
84 marks, where they held joint second position with Kingscourt NS. After a
dramatic tiebreak, Kingscourt captured the second-place with Coronea finishing
third.
Congratulations
to the Corlis team of Paul and Noelle Fitzpatrick and the Coronea team of Cian
Geoghegan, Aisling Corcoran, Laura Deignan and Seamus Cullen, all of whom done
their schools, their families and their locality proud by doing so well on this
important occasion.
