Scor na nOg

On next Sunday afternoon, large numbers of local people will be traveling to Ballyconnell Community Centre next Sunday afternoon where Cornafean will be taking part in the first round of this year’s Cavan Scor na nOg competitions. The pre-Christmas Scor na nOg shows are always among the highlights of the year in the locality and have always attracted huge interest in Cornafean and indeed many other areas throughout the county.

The Cornafean boys and girls have been busy practising for Sunday’s first round for several weeks and no doubt all the Cornafean acts will produce great performances on this occasion. A bumper package of entertainment is guaranteed with teams from Killeshandra, Ballinagh, Lacken, Mullahoran, Lurgan and Killygarry also taking part. The show starts at 3.00pm, and the show is likely to attract a capacity attendance.

Football

On Sunday last, the Cornafean senior footballers entertained visitors Munterconnaught in Pairc Naoimh Fionnan in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 league. This game was played on an unseasonally warm and sunny afternoon, a huge change from the inclement conditions of sleet and frost only a couple of days previously. The game was rather one-sided, as the visitors were short a few regulars and Cornafean had little difficulty in winning the game on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-9.

On Saturday, the spotlight was on the local Cormore Gaels under-21 side who were in action against O’Raghallaigh Gaels in the semi-final of the Cavan Crystal Championship. There were high hopes that the local team would emulate their achievement of a year earlier in qualifying for the final, but it was not to be as the O’Raghallaigh Gaels team won out by four points, with the final scoreline reading O’Raghallaigh Gaels 0-13 Cormore Gaels 0-9.

Improvements approved for Corlis National School

Mr Brendan Smith, T.D., has recently announced that the Minister for Education and Science, Dr. Michael Woods, T.D., has now approved the provision of improvement works at Corlis National School. Deputy Smith stated that approval has now issued in respect of the engagement of an Architect/Engineer to draw up the appropriate plans of a new temporary classroom and other improvement works at the school. This will come as great news for the teachers, parents and management of the school, which has recorded large increases in pupil numbers in recent years.

Football Defeat

The Cornafean senior footballers were back in action last Saturday in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 league when they made the short trip to Michael Cully Park, Arva to play the locals.

As both teams are no longer in contention for league honours this year, it was no surprise that the game was played in a fairly low-key atmosphere – a far cry from several of the spirited Spring and Summer encounters between the two clubs in recent Championship and league campaigns. A sharper Arva side had the upper hand for most of the sixty minutes and they were full value for their 0-12 to 0-7 victory.

Annual Harvest Thanksgiving

The annual Harvest Thanksgiving is being held in Drumkeeran Presbyterian Church on Sunday 4th November at 7.30pm.

This annual event is one of the most special occasions in the Presbyterian Church each year when the churches are suitably and lavishly decorated with fruits, flowers and vegetables and the Harvest Services are a Thanksgiving for God's continued mercies, including material as well as spiritual.

Harvest time in the Bible was also a symbol to remind of the Final Reaping when the Lord returns to bring His harvest home and when the wheat is separated from the tares. His call is to be ready in our hearts for His coming for we do not know the hour.

For the Thanksgiving on Sunday evening next in Drumkeeran Church, we welcome back the Rev. Tom Luke who has just retired having ministered in Drumreagh, Co. Antrim for many years. Friends and neighbours in the community and children are most welcome to this family service.
