Cornafean Notes 18 July 2005

Golf Classic for Local Sports Hall

Cornafean GAA club are holding their annual Golf Classic on the weekend of 29th-30th July, the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend.

The Golf Classic is being held in Cornafean Golf Course and the main sponsor is Sierra Communications. This has been a very popular event in recent years and this year's Classic promises to be as equally successful and enjoyable. It is hoped this year that tee times will be available towards participating teams at various times over the weekend on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday night, an Irish Night and Presentation of prizes will take place in McSeain’s Lounge.

The proceeds of the Golf Classic will be in aid of the new sports hall development at the club grounds in Cornafean, which was officially opened last November. The hall is now being used as an indoor sports venue and community centre  by a wide range of clubs and societies and is already proving to be a valued resource for the entire community. While the club has been extremely successful to date in fundraising towards the cost of the venture, a significant debt remains to be paid in relation to the hall and the purpose of the Golf Classic is to raise funds to this end.

The organisers are hoping from a great response from individuals, businesses and companies, who are being invited to enter a team or contribute sponsorship towards the event.

The cost per team of four is €60 to include light refreshments. Attractive prizes will be on offer to the winning teams. Tees and Greens can be sponsored for €50 each. Sponsors will be posted on the Tees and Greens and will be publicly acknowledged  and displayed  on our community website www.cornafean.com. A Time Sheet will be in operation on the day and teams  may be entered by telephone to Dominic King, Drumcrow,  (049 4337415) / (087 269 6918 ) or to Padraig Cosgrove, Corlismore  (049 4337094)

Tremendous Win

St Tiernach’s Park in Clones was the place to be for all Cavan GAA

supporters last Sunday as the Breffni Blues recorded a narrow but

well-deserved win over the Royals of Meath in the Round 3

Championship Qualifier. Cavan had heroes on every line on what was

a memorable afternoon for the county, but surely the greatest

display of all came from the evergreen midfielder Dermot McCabe.

While the banners draped across the Diamond and Fermanagh Street on

Sunday proudly acclaimed the recent achievements of local hero Kevin

McBride, the man in the blue number 8 jersey was laying an equally

strong claim to the title of ‘the Clones Colossus’ with one of his

finest games ever in the Cavan colours. With a bit of luck, we

might well see Dermot and his Breffni team-mates taking the field

in Croke Park in the next couple of weeks and after that who knows

what might happen!!

GAA Summer Camps

After Cavan’s fantastic win over Meath in Clones last Sunday there is tremendous anticipation in the locality for the forthcoming Cavan GAA Summer Camp which will be held in Cornafean GAA Park starting on Monday, July 25th and ending on Friday July 29th.

The Cavan GAA Summer Camps are sponsored by P. Clarke & Sons in conjunction with Cavan Co. Board Games Development committee and boys and girls aged between 5 and 13 years are welcome to come along and enjoy the fun.

Hundreds of boys and girls throughout Co. Cavan have already enjoyed the earlier camps this Summer in venues such as Kingspan-Breffni Park, Bailieboro and Cootehill and there are high hopes this year's camp in Cornafean will be equally successful.
