St John’s Eve Bonfire & Irish Night

A special St John’s Eve Bonfire and Irish Night was organised by Glór Bhréifne and Dessie Harrington in McSeains on last Thursday, 23rd June and it turned out to be a very successful occasion with a large crowd of locals and members of Glór Bhreife in attendance. The nights proceedings began with Jim Hannon who gave a short talk on the late Pól McSeain and his endeavours in promoting Irish culture and language. There then followed a talk from Criostóir Mac Carthaigh from the Folklore Commission on the Traditions of St John’s Eve and other Celtic Festivals.

Afterwards, there was music by Brian Rudden, Tommy Charlie Sheridan and Seamus Donohoe, from the Grúpa Cheoil comprised of children from Gaelscoil Bhréifne, and also songs and recitations from Sean Masterson. Ronan Harrington then had the honour of lighting the bonfire and there followed a great sing-song as Gaeilge with songs from Sean Masterson, John Lynch, Ronan Harrington and Gráinne Nic Philib. Overall it was a very enjoyable night with plenty of Irish spoken on the night. Following its success, there is now a strong possibility of forming an Irish Language group in the locality.

Annual Summer Barbeque

The Kilmore Cathedral Parish are holding their 11th annual Summer Barbeque in Kilmore Parochial Hall on Friday night of next week, 8th July from 8 o'clock onwards. The evenings proceedings will start at 7pm with a Car Treasure Hunt, which starts from the Hall.

This is always one of the highlights of the social calendar in the locality and is an occasion not to be missed. Admission, which includes a meal, is a very reasonable 10 euro for adults and 5 euro for children under 12, and tickets can be purchased in advance from local sources.

Tour to Scotland

The local Active Age club are planning a four-day, three-night trip to Scotland next month. The group will stay at the luxurious 5-star Millennium Hotel in Glasgow and the trip will involve day tours to the Scottish capital Edinburgh and to the world-famous scenery of Loch Lomond.

The trip will take place on 22-25 July, with the party leaving Cornafean at 7.30am on 22nd July, to travel to Belfast where they will board the Stena Line HSS to Scotland. The group will arrive back in Cornafean at 9pm on 25th July. Those interested are asked to note the changes to the itinerary from those first advertised.

A deposit of €100 is due by 29th June and the full payment of €395 is due for payment by 8th July. For further information, contact Tommy at 049 4337205, Teresa at 049 4337624 or Maura at 049 4337469. Last date for membership is 26th June

Parent & Toddler Group.

The Information Meeting hosted by the local Parent & Toddler Group last Thursday night was extremely successful and there appears to be grerat interest in the formation of the new group. A further meeting will be held on Thursday 7th July in the Community Centre to further progress the development of the new group. All parents and childminders are heartily welcome.

Disappointment in Clones

A large contingent of locals were in Clones on last Saturday evening’s Ulster Championship game and there was tremendous disappointment at Cavan’s heavy defeat to Tyrone. Cavan’s cause was a forlorn one once they conceded three first-half goals to the strong Tyrone forward-line expertly marshaled by the peerless Peter Canavan and all Breffni hopes were extinguished when the O’Neill county recorded a string of fine scores after the interval. In fairness to Cavan, no county in Ireland would have coped with the power and class that Tyrone unleashed in spades on Saturday evening, and if Tyrone continue in similar vein for the remainder of the Championship, they will be extremely hard to beat.

Next Sunday, the focus turns to Kingspan Breffni Park for an attractive qualifier fixture against Brian McEniff’s Donegal. Once again this will be a difficult assignment for the Breffni blues but if they can put last Saturday’s disappointment behind them, the Cavan lads are well capable of overcoming the Tir Chonaill challenge in what should be a tight game.

Vintage Tractor Club

The local Vintage Tractor Club are holding a meeting in McSeains on this Friday night at 9.30pm. On Sunday a contingent of local enthusiasts are travelling by bus to a Show in Co. Mayo and any members interested in travelling are asked to contact Sean Kelly on 086 2582107 as soon as possible.

Cornafean Notes 7 June 2005

Under-16’s are Champions!

Congratulations to the Cornafean/Killeshandra Under-16 footballers who recently became Cavan Division 3
League Champions for 2005 when they had six points to spare over rivals Belturbet in the final played in First
Ulsters Park Ballyconnell on Wednesday 25th May. There was much jubilation among the local supporters
when captain Fergus O’Reilly was presented with the Under-16 Cup by John Duffy, Secretary of Cavan
GAA Minor Board. This is the latest in a series of successes for the amalgamations between the Cornafean
and Killeshandra clubs at juvenile levels in recent years and follows the success of last year’s minor side in
winning the League and Championship double, and last year’s Under-16’s in gallantly reaching the Championship
final. These successes bode well for the future fortunes of both clubs and are a tremendous vindication of the
hard work and dedication of their mentors and loyal supporters.

The late Kevin Harwood

The recent tragic death of Kevin Harwood, Annagh, Cornafean has caused widespread grief and devastation
throughout the community in Cornafean. Kevin, who died on Sunday 29th May following a road accident,
was a most popular and highly regarded member of the community. Aged just 19 years, Kevin was an
apprentice carpenter with James Elliott Building Contractors and at the time of his untimely death was training
for this purpose at the Dundalk Institute of Technology. After finishing school a few years ago he followed in
the footsteps of his father and grandfather in joining the carpentry trade and quickly showed a tremendous
natural skill and aptitude for his work. In recent times he had devoted some of his spare time to completing
various carpentry works and tasks in local households, and he was renowned for the quality and professionalism
of his work and not least for his most pleasant and gentlemanly manner.

Although somewhat shy and reserved by nature, his warm and engaging personality endeared him to everyone
and he will be remembered by one and all as a very decent, kind friendly and obliging young man.

He will be sadly missed by the entire community in Cornafean but most especially by his loving parents Jim
and Mary, his sister Donna, his brother Brian, his grandparents, and other relatives to whom we extend
deepest sympathy.

There were large gatherings of mourners at the removal of his remains from his residence to St Patrick’s
Church Drumcor on Tuesday evening of last week and at his Funeral Mass on Wednesday with burial in
 the adjoining cemetery.

Mr. Padraig Myles

There was universal sadness and regret in the locality recently on the untimely and unexpected death of Padraig
Myles, Drumcrow, Corlismore. Aged in his mid-thirties Padraig was well known as a pleasant and friendly young
man who was held in high esteem by everyone who knew him.

There were large attendances at the removal of this remains on Sunday 29th May from the residence of his brother
Gus to St Michael’s Church Potahee and at his Funeral Mass on the following morning. We extend our deepest
and most sincere sympathy to his heartbroken parents Pat and Maura, brother Gus, sisters Siobhan, Patricia, Marie
and Helena and his other relatives.

Thousandaire Event

Lacken Camogie Club are hosting “Who wants to be a Thousandaire” in the Hotel Kilmore on Thursday of next
week, 16th June. It promises to be a great occasion and tickets are available from committee members and club
