The Drumcor Activity
Den held a Sports Day in Cornafean Park on the recent June Bank Holiday Monday
and the event was a tremendous success, with a large number of children enjoying
a wonderful day’s fun. The proceeds of the day were in aid of People In Need,
and an incredible total of €2,233.88 was raised on the day. Well done to all
concerned, especially the parents and volunteers who worked so hard to make the
day such a success
There
was widespread sadness in the locality last weekend on the death of Terence
(Terry) Hyland, Wateraughey, Corlismore who died suddenly on Thursday last June
24th. Terry, who was predeceased by his wife Maureen, will be remembered as one
of life’s gentlemen. Throughout
his lifetime Terry was widely known as an agricultural contractor.
He
started a threshing business fifty years ago in 1954 which he continued for many
years until the mid 1970s. During his many years working “on the country”
Terry saw many changes in farming and rural life, from the good old days when a
meitheal of seven or eight men would assemble to gather a crop of oats or barley
to the more intensive agriculture of modern times. In latter years, Terry
maintained a keen interest in threshing and machinery and he regularly displayed
his threshing skills at field days and vintage displays, both locally at the
annual vintage ploughing days in Cornafean at similar events further afield. A
very decent, kind and obliging man, he will be sadly missed by
everyone who knew him
There
were large attendances at the removal of his remains to St Michael’s Church
Potahee on last Friday evening and at his Funeral Mass on Saturday with burial
in the adjoining cemetery.
We
extend our deepest sympathy to his sons Michael, Terry, and Finnian, sisters,
grandchildren, daughters-in-law and other relatives.
The
Cornafean senior footballers enjoyed a good win last Saturday evening when they
travelled to Drumlane to take on the locals in the Cathal Brady Intermediate
League. Cornafean went into the game as underdogs but upset the formbook in an
entertaining game to win by 0-12 to 0-10. A week earlier, Cornafean were beaten
by Lavey in their second game of this year’s Intermediate Championship. The
local lads were boosted by fine first-half goals from Thanasie Kaldanis and
Ciaran O’Reilly but a strong Lavey attack, powered by county star Sean Maguire
and longtime stalwart Seamus Donohoe, had the upper hand against an
understrength Cornafean defence. The final scoreline was 3-12 to 2-11 in
Lavey’s favour.
We wish
the Cavan senior team every success next Sunday when they take on Derry in
Celtic Park in round 2 of the All Ireland qualifiers. This game will bring back
many memories for Cavan folk. In the last meeting of these sides at the Derry
venue, Cavan beat the Sperrin men in round 1 of the 2002 National League,
Cavan’s first competitive game under Mattie Kerrigan’s stewardship. Six
months earlier, Derry were winners when the teams met in the All Ireland
Qualifiers in Clones, a week after Cavan’s narrow defeat against Tyrone in the
2001 Ulster final. Hopefully Cavan can record a victory on Sunday and continue
their impressive run in this year’s Championship.

June, at Cornafean Golf Course. It is expected that this will be a
very successful event and a very enjoyable day for all participants.
The event is being held in order to help raise funds for the
improvement of facilities at Joe Crowe Park, including the
development of a new playing pitch and improvements to the existing
pitch & Club Rooms.

are four members per team, which may be all male, all female or a
combination of both. A time sheet will be in operation.

The annual Kimore Cathedral Parish Barbeque will be held at Kilmore
Hall on Friday 9th July, starting at 8.00pm. The barbeque will be
preceded by a car Treasure Hunt which starts from the hall at 7.00pm.
Admission to the barbeque is 10 euro for adults at 5 euro for
children under 12.
The Cornafean Vintage Ploughing Association are holding an Irish
Night in Cronins, Ballinagh on this Saturday night, 19th June. There
will be a variety of musical entertainment on the night and a great
night’s fun is guaranteed. All support will greatly appreciated.
This Saturday evening, the Cornafean footballers take on Lavey in
their second game of this year’s Intermediate Championship campaign.
The game will take place in Killygarry with a 7.30pm throw-in. This
should be a very exciting and entertaining game and hopefully a large
Cornafean support will turn out to cheer on the local lads. Cornafean
and Lavey have met frequently in championship games in recent years,
most recently in a relegation playoff match two years ago in
Killeshandra when a late Damien O’Rourke goal earned Cornafean a
narrow victory. Two years previously, the sides met in the opening
round of the Intermediate Championship in a game which finished in a
draw.
Meanwhile, we congratulate the Cavan senior team and management on
their strong display against Armagh last Sunday in Clones. In the
end, Armagh’s greater depth of experience paid dividends for them at
the expense of a gallant Cavan side. Hopefully Cavan’s young panel
can learn from this experience and with a bit of luck they are well
capable of making an impact in the coming weeks in the All Ireland
Qualifiers.

Last Monday, 7th June was the fortieth anniversary of the official opening of Pairc Naoimh Fionnain, Cornafean, which took place on Sunday 7th June 1964. The official opening was performed by Mr. Harry Carey, President of the Ulster Council, and was followed by an inter-county football challenge between Cavan and the then Connacht Champions, and later three-in-a-row All Ireland winners, Galway. With a large crowd present Cavan won the game by 1-14 to 3-3. Among the Cavan stars were Gabriel Kelly, Jim McDonnell, Ray Carolan and the late Tom Maguire and Charlie Gallagher, while Galway’s ranks included household names such as Johnny Geraghty, Bosco McDermott, Mattie McDonagh and John Keenan. The day’s proceedings began with a challenge match between Drumlish and the then Cavan county champions Mullahoran.
The official opening of the park was the culmination of several years trojan work by the club committee, led by club President Fr Brian McNamara, chairman Peadar Doyle, vice-chairman Tommy Brady, secretary Tom McSeain and treasurer Willie McGibney. The property of seven Irish acres was purchased from Mr. Joe Leavy in 1961 at a cost of £480, and the development of the grounds was completed mainly through voluntary labour with local people working at the site on countless evenings with their shovels spades and picks. At the time, the Anglo Celt recorded that in the first few days of work on the project, the volunteers had already levelled 150 yards of hedging, cleared 85 yards of drains and had made over 400 cement blocks for the dressing rooms. At the same time as the development work was taking place, a massive fundraising effort was underway with tickets being sold in places as far away as Longford, Clones, Castleblayney and Monaghan. One man who made a colossal contribution to the fundraising effort was John O’Reilly, formerly of Drumambry and now Farnadolly.
In the forty years since its official opening, the local park has been a tremendous resource to the local community with thousands of local boys and girls enjoying its facilities down through the years. It has long been especially noted for the fine condition of its playing surface, which generally remains playable even in the worst winter weather. Over the years it has been used for many high-profile games, especially in colleges grades, at times of year when few other pitches in the region would have been playable. The local club has invested considerable resources in ground improvements over the years, including the construction of a covered stand in 1987 and more recently the installation of an electronic scoreboard. At present, the club is involved in the construction of a special purpose sports hall at the ground, and the completion of this project will greatly enhance the ground’s facilities for present and future generations.
Last Saturday evening, Cornafean entertained visitors Ballinagh in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain in Division 2 and 2A games in the Cathal Brady Intermediate League. The visitors were much too strong for the home side in both games. In the senior game, there was little between the sides in a competitive opening half with Ballinagh enjoying a narrow lead at the interval. However the visitors took control in the second half and eventually ran out easy winners by 0-15 to 0-7. Ballinagh were also dominant for long periods of the junior game and they had quite a bit to spare over a youthful Cornafean at the final whistle. Meanwhile our under 10 footballers enjoyed a special treat on last Saturday morning when Ballinagh’s county star Anthony Gaynor visited their weekly training session and very kindly stayed for the entire session, helping to train the young footballers and signing autographs afterwards. The Cornafean mentors greatly appreciated Anthony’s generous assistance, especially given his very busy schedule at the moment, and we wish him and the entire Cavan team every good luck in next Sunday’s Ulster semi-final against Armagh.
The
local Vintage Tractor Club are holding a meeting on this Friday night, in
Colette’s Bar, Killeshandra at 9.30pm. All members are asked to attend.
