Cornafean Notes 30th June 2003

Kilmore Summer Barbeque this Friday Night

The Kilmore Cathedral Parish are holding their annual Summer Barbeque in Kilmore Parochial Hall on this Friday night, 4th July from 8 o'clock onwards.

The evenings proceedings will start at 7pm with a Car Treasure Hunt, which starts from the Hall. Later on, there will be dancing to music in the hall from 11pm until late.

This event has for several years been extremely popular and well-supported with many hundreds of people gathering each year for a feast of fine food and entertainment. Everyone involved in organising the event are hopeful that the recent good weather will continue for the evening but come rain or shine the Kilmore Summer Barbeque is always a hugely enjoyable occasion and a chance to meet up with friends and neighbours old and new..

Admission, which includes a meal, is a very reasonable 10 euro for adults and 5 euro for children, and tickets can be purchased in advance from local sources.

Mr. Seos McSeain

There was deep sadness in the locality recently on the death of Mr. Seos McSeain, Corratubber, Killykeen who died suddenly at Cavan General Hospital on Monday 16th June. Seos was well known for his enthusiasm for sport and had a particular interest in local hunting and football affairs. A very friendly and obliging man, he will be also remembered for his keen sense of humour and wit. We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Philomena, brothers Dermot, Tom and Peadar, sisters Shonie, Maeve, Nonie and Barnie, nephews, nieces and other relatives. There were large attendances at the Removal of his Remains to St. Patrick’s Church, Drumcor and at the Funeral Mass on Wednesday 18th June

Mr. Paddy McManus.

Mr. Paddy McManus, Drumora, who died on Tuesday last in Cavan General Hospital, was a well-known and popular member of the local community. Although he had been in declining health for some time, his death came to a great shock to everyone who knew him. A native of Kildallan, he lived for most of his life in Drumora. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Kathleen, sons, Kevin, James and Eugene, daughters Vera and Anna-Rose, his brother Benny, sister Mary and other relatives. There were large attendances at the Removal of his Remains to St. Patrick’s Church, Drumcor and at the Funeral Mass on last Thursday.

Mr. Tom Brady.

There was widespread sadness among the community last week on the death of Mr. Tom Brady, Killygoan who died in Cavan General Hospital following a tractor accident. Tom was a popular member of the local community and was held in high regard by everyone who knew him. There were large and representative attendances at the Removal of his Remains to St. Patrick’s Church, Drumcor and at the Funeral Mass on last Thursday.

Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Teresa, sons Patrick, Thomas, and Philip, daughters Mary, Veronica, Josephine Margaret and Geraldine, brother John James, sisters Kathleen and Mary and other relatives.

Mr. Harry Tilson

It is with deep regret that we record the death of Mr. Harry Tilson, formerly of Gartbrattan, who died suddenly at Cavan General Hospital on Tuesday of last week. The deceased was a highly respected and well known member of the community and his death was met with deep sadness throughout a wide area. We extend our deepest sympathy to his niece Mrs Barbara Stafford-Wilson, nephew-in-law George and other relatives. There was a large attendance at his Funeral Service which took place in St Feithlimidh’s Cathedral, Kilmore on Thursday last with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Football Fortunes

Last Saturday evening the Cornafean footballers entertained Butlersbridge in the Cavan Intermediate League and the local lads produced their best form of the season in a dramatic game which finished a draw: Cornafean 0-12 Butlersbridge 1-9. Cornafean led by four points as the game neared the final whistle but in an eventful finale the Bridge scored a goal and a point to take a share of the league points. Following their recent run of defeats, the Cornafean lads can take great heart from their display in this game and hopefully they can build on this success in their forthcoming league and championship games in the coming weeks.

Commiserations to the Cavan senior footballers who exited this year’s All Ireland Championship in losing narrowly to Fermanagh in a sun-drenched Brewster Park, Enniskillen last Sunday. In the end, Cavan’s ever-mounting toll of injuries to key players fatally undermined their challenge in a game that could have gone either way. With over seven months to go before the start of the 2004 National League, it will now be a case of “back to the drawing board” for all involved in the county scene, but hopefully Cavan’s young side put their recent disappointments behind them in the New Year.

CD Selling Well

There has been a tremendous reaction amongst local people and traditional music enthusiasts at home and abroad to the recently launched double CD “The Cornafean Ceili Group - 25 Years On”. The double CD contains almost 150 minutes of music song and recitation of local interest and there is a rich and rare variety of entertainment in its 43 tracks. Copies are on sale in a variety of local outlets and strong sales have been reported so far.

The launch of the CD attracted a capacity attendance to McSeains of Friday 20th June, where a magnificent night of entertainment was enjoyed by everyone. The launch was preceded by a beautiful Mass in Coronea Church, celebrated by Fr. Tom McKiernan, whose connections with the local music scene stretch back to the halcyon days of the Macra na Tuaithe and Youth Band in the early 1970’s.

The star attraction on the night was the virtuoso traditional fiddle musician, Maurice Lennon, formerly of Stockton’s Wing and more recently a star in his own right. Indeed Maurice’s contribution to the occasion was extremely generous and impressive, as he played beautifully at the Mass in Coronea before later performing at the launch itself and he participated with the Group members as they performed in Cornafean, Arva, Killeshandra and Ballinagh over the course of the weekend, as well as hosting the Fiddle Workshop in Drumcor on Saturday morning. Over the weekend, Maurice was hosted by Terry O’Reilly and his wife Erika who travelled from Germany home to Killeshandra for the event. We thank Maurice most sincerely for his wonderful contribution to the success of the weekend.

The CD was officially launched by the Cavan County GAA Board Chairman George Cartwright, who in an evocative address recalled the great cultural tradition that has existed in Cornafean for over a hundred years, and who paid tribute to the role played by Paddy McDermott and the Cornafean Ceili Group in giving this tradition fresh life and impetus over the past three decades. George expressed his delight in being honoured to launch the new CD, which he said would be a lasting record of this tradition. In doing so he praised the many talented musicians, singers and recitation artistes who appear on the CD.

In his address to the gathering, Paddy McDermott thanked the many people who had made the CD possible and who had helped out in the various stages of the process, including the guest musicians and entertainers, including the Morrow family, Carrigallen, the McGovern family, Templeport and the Cuchullains Scor and Wrenboys Groups who had collaborated with the Cornafean Group over the years and who were all represented at the CD launch.

A video of the night's celebrations has been recorded by Pat Lee, Cullies and copies are available for purchase from him.

On last Friday night, a special “re-launch” event was held in Brady’s Rathmines Inn, Dublin where Maurice Lennon re-launched the double CD to a rapturous reception from the capacity audience.

Recent Tours

In recent weeks both the Cornafean Positive Age Group and the Drumcor Active Retirement Group have enjoyed outings to Dublin. A fortnight ago, the Cornafean contingent visited Dail Eireann and the Guinness Brewery on what was reported to be a hugely enjoyable day out, while last Wednesday the Drumcor Group again visited the Dail before proceeding to enjoy a sunny summer afternoon at Dublin Zoo.

Silver Jubilee Celebrations

This coming weekend promises to be a very special one in Cornafean with  the holding of the Cornafean Ceili Group Silver Jubilee Celebration weekend and the launch of the Ceili Group's double CD -“The Cornafean Ceili Group – 25 Years On”. In the past few days the organisers, led by the group’s founder and leader Paddy McDermott have been putting the final touches to the plans for the celebrations and a great weekend is in store for the people of the area and all traditional music enthusiasts, many of whom will flock to the area to join in the celebrations.

On next Friday night, 20th June, a special Mass will be celebrated at 8.30pm in Coronea Church in memory of the deceased members of the community who participated in the Ceili Group, Youth Band, Scor, Tops of the Town and other cultural activities in the locality in the past three decades.

After the Mass, the formal launch of the CD will be held in McSeains and Mr. George Cartwright, Chairman of Cavan County GAA Board will officially launch the double CD. The organisers have put together an attractive programme of musical entertainment, which will follow the launch. Among the entertainers to play on the night will be the famed traditional fiddle musician Maurice Lennon, a co-founder of the magnificent 'Stockton's Wing' group, and a well-known musical producer in his own right. The Ceili Group itself will also be playing some of their well-known tunes and this in itself promises to be a very special occasion, with many former Group members rejoining their colleagues to play on the night. The entertainment will also include some other local singers, musicians and recitation acts, many of whom are featured on the double CD.

The double CD will include an incredible 150 minutes of music, song and recitation. Its varied content recalls many of the highlights of the vibrant Irish traditional culture that has flourished over the past thirty years in Cornafean, from the early days of the local Marching Band and Tops of the Town groups in the 1970's and '80s, and including such successes as the Ceili Group's various European tours, its participation with the famed Cross/Mullagh Wrenboys and Bard of Breifne festival acts, and also the various Cornafean Scor acts that achieved many successes in provincial and national competitions over the years.

A special treat for followers of Irish music will be a workshop, hosted by Maurice Lennon, on Saturday morning 21st June, in Drumcor Community Centre where the master musician will impart some of his skills to local enthusiasts.

Later on over the course of the weekend, the Ceili Group will play at a number of the local venues in neighbouring towns where they gained such a loyal following over the years. All in all, the weekend promises to be an event to savour and the organisers wish to extend  a hearty Cead Mile Failte to one and all to join them this weekend in their Jubilee celebrations.

For those who cannot make it to Cornafean next Friday night, a special function to mark the launch of the double CD will be held in Brady’s Rathmines Inn, Dublin on Friday 27th June.

Mr. Seos McSeain

We record with great sadness the death this week of Mr. Seos McSeain, Cortober, Killykeen who died suddenly on Monday. A full obituary will appear next week.

Countdown to Silver Jubilee Celebrations

There is great excitement and anticipitation in the locality in advance of the Cornafean Ceili Group Silver Jubilee Celebration weekend which will take place locally on the weekend of 20th – 22nd June. The centrepiece of the celebrations will be the launch of the Ceili Group's double CD -“The Cornafean Ceili Group – 25 Years On”.

On next Friday week, 20th June, a special Mass will be celebrated at 8.30pm in Coronea Church in memory of the deceased members of the community who participated in this sucess during the past three decades. After the Mass, the formal launch of the CD will be held in McSeains and this will be followed by a night of musical entertainment.

The star attraction on the night will be the famed traditional fiddle musician Maurice Lennon, a co-founder of the magnificent 'Stockton's Wing' group and a man who has played alongside the very greatest of the world's musical talents including  Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli, Sammy Davis Jr., Stephan Grapelli and Michael Jackson. He has worked with many prestigious producers including Bill Whelan, John Ryan, Shaun Davey, P.J.Curtis, Steve Cooney and Donal Lunny, and in 2001 he became the musical inspiration behind the acclaimed Ragus group from the Aran Islands, producing a  phenomenally successful album and sell-out live show in Dublin's Vicar Street venue.

A special treat for followers of Irish music will be a workshop, hosted by Maurice Lennon, on Saturday morning 21st June, in Drumcor Community Centre where the master musician will impart some of his skills to local enthusiasts.

The organizing committee have been very busy in recent weeks preparing for the weekend’s celebrations and a great occasion is in prospect, with many former members of the Ceili Group and other traditional and cultural groups travelling from far and wide, including from abroad, for the weekend. It promises to be an event not to be missed.

Busy Football Weekend

Last Saturday, the footballers of Cornafean took on Denn in the Hayes TV Intermediate League with the Denn side winning out on a scoreline of 0-14 to 1-3. Going into this game, few people gave Cornafean a chance of even putting up a strong challenge, following the hammering that the local side endured at the hands of same opposition in last year’s Championship. However Cornafean failed to heed their detractors, producing a stirring first-half display at the end of which they led by a point. Denn were much the stronger side in the second half and ultimately were well deserving of their eight-point margin of victory.

On Sunday evening the attention turned to the fortunes of the Cavan senior footballers who took on Louth in the first round of the All Ireland Championship Qualifiers in Pairc Tailteann, Navan. The young Breffni side deserve much credit for their achievement in overcoming the challenge of the “Wee County” men who had been regarded in many quarters as one of the dark horses in this year’s championship. This was Cavan’s first win in six championship outings since they beat Monaghan in the Ulster semi-final in Clones in June 2001and hopefully the entire county will be loyally behind their team as they endeavour to advance further in the Championship in the coming weeks.
