Congratulations
to Ciaran Lee, Gowna who scooped a cool £6,100 in the Cornafean GFC Lotto draw
on last Sunday night week Ciaran’s
winning numbers were 4, 7, 11 and 24.
No doubt the orange pop will be on tap in a few premises in Gowna for quite a while to come. Ciaran’s good run continued into a second week when he won a £20 raffle prize in last Sunday’s night’s Lotto, which was held in McSeain’s. The other £20 winners were Hugh Cosgrove, Drumcrow, Dessie Harrington, Drumkeeran, Charlie Sheridan, Drumcrow and Therese McSeain, Cherrybank. The winning numbers were 5, 8, 9 and 12. There was no winner of the Jackpot of £1,000 and therefore the Jackpot for next week’s draw will be £1,100. The draw takes place in the Shantully Inn on next Sunday night.
Cornafean Community Development Association are holding a meeting in McSeains on next Monday night, 2nd July at 9.30. This meeting was originally fixed for last Monday night but was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. All members are requested to attend and new members are especially welcome.
On last Wednesday night,
neighbours Lacken Celtic ended Cornafean’s unbeaten run in the Division 3 West
of the Cathal Brady Reserve League. Lacken came to Pairc Naoimh Fionnain as
underdogs but put together a strong display to defeat the home side, who were
short a few key players due to work commitments. Last Friday night’s scheduled
game in the same competition against Killeshandra was postponed.
Cavan reach the Final
On Sunday last, the GAA spotlight turned towards the Cavan Senior and Minor teams who were in action against Monaghan in the Ulster Semi-finals in Clones. While the minors bowed out against a strong Monaghan team, there was more joy for the seniors, who qualified for the Ulster Final by beating the Farney men by two points.

While this wasn’t Cavan’s greatest ever display, they still deserve great credit for reaching the decider, a milestone which many pundits would have judged to be beyond the reach of the Blues at the outset of the campaign. It must also be remembered that Sunday’s game was played in extremely hot conditions, which made it especially difficult for both teams to sustain the speedy pace of the game for the full 70 minutes.
Cavan’s huge band of supporters will be looking forward to the
Final on next Sunday week. Cavan will undoubtedly go into the game as underdogs
against Tyrone but Val Andrews and his squad will surely not lack motivation,
after being bitterly criticised by Pat Spillane and other armchair “experts”
on RTE television on Sunday evening. It is somewhat comical that a small number
of pundits can see fit to pontificate from the comfort of a TV studio about
games that they don’t even bother to attend, but that, surely, is a matter for
another day.
Death of Mrs. Kathleen O’Reilly
There was deep sadness in the locality on the recent death of Mrs Kathleen O’Reilly nee Masterson, Cormore, who died in St. Christopher’s Hospice, Cavan on Monday 11th June. A native of Bruse, she lived in New York for almost 20 years with her husband Vincent before returning to Arva in 1970 where they operated the popular “Three Counties Inn” until they retired from business in the mid-1980’s.
She was known as a very friendly, gentle person, who was held in very high esteem by everyone in the community. There were large attendances at the Removal of her remains to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva on Tuesday 12th June, and at the Funeral Mass on Wednesday with burial in Coronea Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to her husband Vincent, son John, daughter-in-law Jackie, grandsons Vincent and Kevin, and other relatives.
On Saturday last the Cornafean
footballers made the long trip to Ballykinlar in the heart of county Down to
take part in the
Bass Ulster Football Sevens Championship for the coveted Neil Thompson Memorial
cup. After a strong run, Cornafean won their first three games but were defeated
by the Monaghan representatives Ballybay in the semi-final.
The current junior champions in each of the nine counties in Ulster took part in
this competition, along with a number of local clubs in Co. Down, and last
year's winners Limavady Wolfhounds from Co. Derry.
Cornafean faced Donegal champions Milford in the first round but took some time to settle and were a goal and four points in arrears at one stage in the game. However, Cornafean fought back with a series of classy goals and ended up convincing winners. In round 2, the opposition was Maguiresbridge from Co. Fermanagh and again Cornafean were in flying form and won out fairly easily. Next up for Cornafean were the host club Ballykinlar, and when Cornafean again emerged clear winners from this game, there were high hopes that the Reds could go the whole way in the competition.
However, their semi-final opponents from Ballybay had other ideas and it was the Monaghan side that won their place in the final by a slender margin of two points.
Despite their disappointment in losing the semi-final, all the Cornafean team and mentors enjoyed the day and were loud in their praise of the Ballykinlar club who hosted this event.
The Ballykinlar venue has, of course, a noteworthy connection with the history of football in Cornafean. It was used as an internment camp during the period of the War of Independence (1919-21), and Pól McSeain, co-founder of the club and a renowned local Gaelic League activist, was interned there in early 1921. On his arrival in Ballykinlar, he formed an athletic club in the camp, with the intention of organising hurling, football and athletics championships among the internees. He wrote a letter to the secretary of the Cavan County Board, seeking financial assistance to purchase medals and trophies and also requesting a football. The County Board opened a fund at the county convention in February of that year and many subscriptions were collected towards the fund.
Congratulations to Ciaran Lee, Gowna who scooped a cool £6,100 in the Cornafean GFC Lotto draw on last Sunday night.
The winning numbers were 4, 7, 11 and 24.
No doubt the orange pop will be on tap in a few premises in Gowna for the most of the week!

As part of their review, Doras commented that "this site is a great resource for the people of Cornafean. A lot of work has gone into this site. The news and event guides are up to date. Navigation is also effective which is a real bonus because with all that information it is important that the browser is not confused."
The full text of the review can be accessed here.
This award was granted on Wednesday last, co-incidentially on the same day as
the number of "hits" to Cornafean Online reached 1,000. This means
that the site was accessed by users one thousand times in less than three weeks.
Long may this success continue!

The Colmcille GFC Golf Classic was held at McSeain's Golf Course on last Saturday, 16th June, and attracted a good attendance of teams from throughout counties Cavan and Longford. The Bank of Ireland announced this week that they are planning to provide an ATM Cash machine at a premises in Ballinagh village. This facility will be wonderful news to the many local people who currently have to travel to Cavan town to make cash withdrawals. It should also have a strongly positive effect for traders in the Ballinagh, Crossdoney and Cornafean areas. Indeed, the availability of ATM machines in Killeshandra and Arva in recent years has been a great boost to both towns, as well as a useful convenience for shoppers.
News of the new facility, which is subject to receipt of planning permission, was warmly welcomed by local councillor Diarmuid Wilson this week.
Well done to the large group of local ladies who recently participated in the Evening Herald Dublin Ladies Mini-Marathon. Among the many thousands of women who ran and walked the 10km course on the June Bank Holiday Monday were Celia McKiernan, Edie Eccleson, Bríd Anne Moran, Rosemary Comiskey and Betty Harrington, all of whom raised sponsorship for the event in aid of a variety of charitable causes. Well done to all concerned.

The death has taken place in Dublin of Miss Kathleen Maguire, Pembroke Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin and formerly of Bingfield Crossdoney. She died on last Friday 1st June at the Royal Hospital, Donnybrook. The deceased was a member of the Maguire family of Bingfield, a family which played a huge part in the glory days of Cornafean and Cavan football. Kathleen’s four brothers, Seamus, Liam, Des and Brendan were among the immortal stars of that glorious era for the Cornafean and Cavan football teams. Their father James Maguire, a native of Newtowngore, came to live in Bingfield in 1924 and his family soon rose to prominence in GAA circles. The family hosted the Cavan
teams who used their home in Bingfield as a base for residential collective training camps on a number of occasions before All Ireland Finals in the 1940’s. In 1948 the Maguire family moved to Ballinacree, near Oldcastle, Co. Meath, but maintained strong links with the Cornafean area over the years.
Kathleen Maguire’s eldest brother, Seamus, won five senior championship medals with Cornafean and starred on many Cavan teams including the team which lost the All Ireland final replay to Roscommon in 1943. Her younger brothers Liam, Des (later ordained a priest with the Columban Fathers) and Brendan were also prominent club and county players and this famous trio made history in the 1952 All Ireland Senior Football Final between Cavan and Meath when Liam and Des lined out for Cavan at left-corner back and centre-half back respectively with their brother Brendan in opposition at midfield on the Meath team. The final ended in a draw with the young Brendan Maguire starring for the Meathmen and earning the accolade of “Sport Star of the Week” from the Irish Independent for his outstanding display. However it was Des and Liam who collected All Ireland medals when the Breffni side won the replay on a scoreline of 0-9 to 0-5.
The late Kathleen Maguire is survived by her sisters Eileen Halpin (Longford) and Mona Brogan (Athboy), sisters-in-law, brother-in-law, nieces, nephews and other relatives, to whom we offer sincere sympathy. Her remains were removed to St. Mary’s Church Haddington Road, Dublin on Saturday evening and with funeral Mass on Sunday following which she was buried in Ballinacree Cemetery, Co. Meath.

Congratulations to three local girls, Aisling Corcoran and Joanne and Lynn O’Reilly who recently performed with the O’Reilly School of Dancing, in front of a capacity audience at the Declan Nerney show in the Park House Hotel in Edgeworthstown. Great credit is due to the three girls and to their tutor Carol O’Reilly for their success on this big occasion.

These are available from any committee member. It is hoped that every household and wage earner in the parish will support this worthy cause.
