Cornafean
GAA club are holding their annual Golf Classic on the weekend of 29th-30th July,
the forthcoming Bank Holiday weekend.
The Golf Classic is being held in
Cornafean Golf Course and the main sponsor is Sierra Communications. This has
been a very popular event in recent years and this year's Classic promises to be
as equally successful and enjoyable. It is hoped this year that tee times will
be available towards participating teams at various times over the weekend on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday night, an Irish Night and Presentation of
prizes will take place in McSeain’s Lounge.
The proceeds of the Golf Classic will be
in aid of the new sports hall development at the club grounds in Cornafean,
which was officially opened last November. The hall is now being used as an
indoor sports venue and community centre by
a wide range of clubs and societies and is already proving to be a valued
resource for the entire community. While the club has been extremely successful
to date in fundraising towards the cost of the venture, a significant debt
remains to be paid in relation to the hall and the purpose of the Golf Classic
is to raise funds to this end.
The organisers are hoping from a great
response from individuals, businesses and companies, who are being invited to
enter a team or contribute sponsorship towards the event.
The
cost per team of four is €60 to include light refreshments. Attractive prizes
will be on offer to the winning teams. Tees and Greens can be sponsored for
€50 each. Sponsors will be posted on the Tees and Greens and will be publicly
acknowledged and displayed

St
Tiernach’s Park in Clones was the place to be for all Cavan GAA
supporters last Sunday as the Breffni
Blues recorded a narrow but
well-deserved win over the Royals of
Meath in the Round 3
Championship Qualifier. Cavan had heroes
on every line on what was
a memorable afternoon for the county,
but surely the greatest
display of all came from the evergreen
midfielder Dermot McCabe.
While the banners draped across the
Diamond and Fermanagh Street on
Sunday proudly acclaimed the recent
achievements of local hero Kevin
McBride, the man in the blue number 8
jersey was laying an equally
strong claim to the title of ‘the
Clones Colossus’ with one of his
finest games ever in the Cavan colours.
With a bit of luck, we
might well see Dermot and his Breffni
team-mates taking the field
in Croke Park in the next couple of
weeks and after that who knows
what might happen!!
After Cavan’s fantastic win over Meath in Clones last Sunday there is tremendous anticipation in the locality for the forthcoming Cavan GAA Summer Camp which will be held in Cornafean GAA Park starting on Monday, July 25th and ending on Friday July 29th.
The Cavan GAA Summer Camps are sponsored
by P. Clarke & Sons in conjunction with Cavan Co. Board Games Development
committee and boys and girls aged between 5 and 13 years are welcome to come
along and enjoy the fun.
Hundreds of boys and girls throughout
Co. Cavan have already enjoyed the earlier camps this Summer in venues such as
Kingspan-Breffni Park, Bailieboro and Cootehill and there are high hopes this
year's camp in Cornafean will be equally successful.
The Kilmore Cathedral Parish Summer Barbeque was a great success on last Friday night with a large attendance enjoying a great evening out, with plenty of good food, social company and musical entertainment.
The weather conditions on a dry, warm July evening were excellent for the entire evening and there was great praise from everyone present for the very high standards of catering at the barbeque.
A very enjoyable crossroads ceili took place at Drumkeeran cross on Saturday night 2nd July. Neighbours young and not so young from the Derrylane area gathered where they enjoyed music, song, storytelling and dancing. There was plenty of hot food cooked and the colcannon was a big favourite with everyone. A large fire burned brightly from early evening and light was provided by a Tilly Lamp which was hanging from a tree. The fire was kept stoked up during the night with timber from the local sawmill. Music boomed through the night air from a sophisticated stereo system and the highlight of the night was Sean Kelly on the bagpipes. It was agreed during the night that Howard McHugh would be crowned "King of the Cross". Health and Safety was an important issue throughout the night and it is hoped that this old custom will be carried on at other crossroads in the area.
On Saturday evening last the Cornafean footballers hosted neighbours Arva in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain in the Division 3 and 3a leagues. The seniors had the better of the exchanges for much of their game but had to survive a few anxious moments in the second half before seeing off the visitors challenge to win by 1-11 to 1-6. The juniors produced a determined display in their game but eventually lost out narrowly to their Arva counterparts.
Next weekend the focus switches once again to the intercounty scene with Cavan taking on Meath in St Tiernach’s Park, Clones in round 3 of the All Ireland Qualifers. No doubt many experts in the media will write off Cavan’s chances going into this game but if Cavan are well capable of advancing to the next round if they repeat the form they showed in overcoming Donegal a fortnight ago.

Mr PJ Leddy
There was widespread sadness and shock in the locality last week on the death of PJ Leddy, Corlismore. PJ’s untimely passing in his mid-thirties is another devastating blow for his family who previously lost his brother Tommy in a tragic accident just 16 months ago. We express our heartfelt sympathy to his parents Tommy and Patricia, sisters Sheila, Breege, Eileen, Rosemary, Colette, Aisling and Anne, and to his other relatives.
Social Function
A social Function in memory of the late Kevin Harwood who died recently will be held in Colette’s Bar, Killeshandra on this Friday evening 15th July starting at 9.00pm All are welcome.

The Kilmore Cathedral Parish are holding
their 11th annual Summer Barbeque
in Kilmore Parochial Hall on this Friday
night, 8th July from 8 o'clock
onwards. The evenings proceedings will
start at 7pm with a Car Treasure
Hunt, which starts from the Hall.
The annual Summer Barbeque is always one
of the highlights of the social
calendar in the locality and for many
years has consistently attracted
attendances of any hundreds of people
who enjoy a fantastic barbeque meal,
entertainment and not least the
opportunity to meet friends young and old.
As in earlier years it is an occasion
not to be missed. Admission, which
includes a meal, is a very reasonable 10
euro for adults and 5 euro for
children under 12, and tickets can be
purchased in advance from local
sources.
On Saturday evening last the Cornafean
footballers hosted visitors
Mountnugent in the Division 3 and 3a
leagues are unfortunately beaten in
both games. The seniors went into their
game on the back of a recent run of
good results but they were defeated by
1-8 to 1-7 in a closely fought
encounter. Mountungent were too strong
for the local juniors, winning out on
a scoreline of 2-8 to 2-2.
In contrast there was joy on Sunday for
the many locals who flocked to
Kingspan Breffni Park on Sunday to see
Cavan record an important win over
Donegal in the All Ireland Qualifiers.
