The annual Cornafean GAA Golf Classic will take part this year on Saturday July 30th, on the weekend of the August Bank Holiday. The proceeds of the event go towards the new Cornafean Sports Hall which is now nearing completion. This new facility promises to be a tremendous sporting and social resource for all the community.

The organisers of the Golf Classic are hoping for an especially strong response this year from local teams and businesses. The cost of entering a team of four is sixty euro while tees and greens may be sponsored at a cost of forty euro each. Championship Game

This weekend the Cornafean footballers take on Cootehill in the latest round of the Hotel Kilmore Intermediate Championship. Following Cornafean’s surprise win over the Celtics in their league meeting on Easter Sunday, this game promises to be a cracker and while Cootehill will be widely fancied to take the spoils on this occasion, Cornafean will be quite capable of  once again causing an upset.

Last Sunday morning, the locals played visitors Laragh United in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain. Despite fielding an understrength team, Cornafean made most of the running in the early stages and were in a strong position leading by 2-4 to 0-4 just before half-time when Laragh scored a morale-boosting goal. Cornafean battled bravely in the second half but were outscored by 0-9 to 0-2 during that time by a now-dominant Laragh side, who had four points to spare at the finish. The final score was Laragh 1-13 Cornafean 2-6.

Co rnafean Notes 13 July 2004

The late Fr. Peter Paul Galligan

The death has taken place in his adopted home of Sydney, Australia of Fr. Peter Paul Galligan P.P., late of Thomascourt, Cavan and a famous Cornafean and Cavan footballer of the early 1940’s. Born in February 1921, Fr. Peter Paul received his early education at Corlurgan N.S. and  St Patrick’s College, Cavan. He later trained for the priesthood at St. Patrick’s Seminary Carlow and was ordained on April 2nd 1946 for the diocese of Sydney, Australia. He ministered for his working lifetime in various parishes in the Sydney region including the seaside community of San Souci where he lived for many years.

Fr. Peter Paul was an illustrious footballer for both Cornafean and Cavan during an era when the fortunes of both club and county were at an all-time pinnacle. Although his football career was curtailed to an extent by his studies for the priesthood and ended prematurely following his ordination, he was a central figure on several notable teams of the period. He was a member of the All Ireland winning Cavan team who defeated Kerry in the 1938 All Ireland final on a Scóreline of 3-3 to 0-8 and a year later won a McRory Cup medal with St. Pat’s College, Cavan.

He won four Ulster senior medals in succession with Cavan  between 1942 and 1945 and played as a corner-back on the county teams defeated in the All Ireland senior finals by Roscommon and Cork respectively in 1943 and 1945. He also starred in defence on the Cornafean teams that won the Cavan county championship finals in 1940, when the locals defeated Killinkere and also in 1943 when they defeated Mullahoran. He also played in the celebrated 1942 final when Cornafean lost to Mullahoran in a game that was widely regarded as a classic and one of the highlights of the famous Cornafean/Mullahoran rivalry that immortalised Cavan football in the 1930s and early 1940’s.

In later years he made frequent visits home from Australia, during which he regularly renewed his lifelong interest in football. He is remembered as a decent, gentle and kind man. We extend our deepest sympathy to his nephews, nieces and friends. A Memorial Mass for him was celebrated on last Tuesday evening, 13th July in St. Felim’s Church, Ballinagh

The late Sighle McAnulty

Many Scór followers in the locality will be saddened to hear of the death last week of Miss Sighle McAnulty, of Warrenpoint, Co. Down. Sighle, who was 88 years old, was the leading member of the St. Peter’s Warrenpoint Question Time team that dominated Scór Sinsir competitions in Ulster for long periods from the inception of Scór in the early 1970s until the mid-1990’s. When the Cornafean teams won Ulster titles in this competition in 1981 and again in 1993 and 1995, their victories were all the more highly regarded due to the fact that they had overcome the great Warrenpoint team on each occasion. In 1996, then aged 80, Sighle led her team to their last provincial Question Time title by beating Cornafean in the final in Threemilehouse and they happily went on to win that year’s All Ireland Final in Athlone. She was also famous as a longtime activist and national administrator of Camogie, and as a camogie and GAA historian. We extend deepest sympathy to her relatives and friends.

All Ireland GAA Quiz Win

Cornafean GAA club recorded a unique All Ireland honour last Sunday when the club’s quiz team won the inaugural GAA All Ireland Trath na gCeisteanna Table Quiz final. The final was held in Croke Park prior to the Leinster Hurling Final between Wexford and Offaly. The Cornafean team were Rita Martin, Brian Doyle, Michael Dinneny and Tommy McGibney. Cornafean qualified for the final in winning the Ulster final of this competition a few weeks ago in Monaghan and on Sunday last each province was represented by the respective winners and runners-up in the provincial competitions.

Among the Cornafean supporters attending the event last Sunday was Oliver Gormley, a member of the winning Ulster Final team while Jim Hannon, who played a huge part in the provincial decider victory, was unable to attend the All Ireland competition due to a prior engagement.

All the questions in the quiz were asked ‘as Gaeilge’ and the quiz was conducted entirely in the national tongue. The event is the brainchild of GAA President Sean Kelly, as part of his effort during his term as President to promote the Irish language within the GAA. His initiative has certainly turned out to be a tremendous success with teams as far apart as Donegal, Kerry and Mayo taking part on Sunday last in what was a very entertaining, varied and keenly-contested quiz. Cornafean were in the running from early on in the quiz and missed only a single question in their first four rounds, at the end of which they trailed Mayo champions Claremorris by that single mark. At the end of the quiz, Cornafean had a single point to spare over former All Ireland Scor Quiz champions Cratloe from Co. Clare with Claremorris a further point behind. The Cornafean team were presented with wonderful Waterford Crystal trophies by Maire Ni Ghraham, Pairc An Chrocaigh.

After the quiz, all contestants enjoyed a lovely meal and watched the minor and senior finals in the comfort of the luxurious Corporate tier in the Hogan Stand.
