Dancing Success for Yvonne

Congratulations to Yvonne McNerney, Coronea, on winning the'Four Masters' Irish Dancing Championship which was held in Rossnowlagh, Co. Donegal on Sunday 15th July.  Yvonne beat a top class field of Irish dancers from all parts of Ireland. Once again we wish her continued success.

St. Joseph's beat St. Mary's

Eamon Gaffney

The St. Joseph's (Cornafean, Killeshandra and Arva) footballers were in action in Plunkett Park, Kilnaleck, on Friday night in the first round of the Cavan Senior Championship against St. Mary's (Munterconnacht and Castlerahan). The St. Joseph's lads enjoyed a good win on a scoreline of 2-14 to 3-4. St. Joseph's were much the stronger team in the first half but had to endure a few nervous moments in the second half before pulling away again in the latter stages to win by seven points. Among the Cornafean players in the starting fifteen for St. Joseph's were Liam Young, Brian Doyle, Rory McSeain, Art McSeain and Eamon Gaffney, who had the honour of captaining the parish team.

Summer Barbeque a Success

The Kilmore Cathedral Parish Summer Barbeque was a great success on last Friday night with a large attendance of several hundred people enjoying a great evening out, with plenty of good food and musical entertainment.

Despite some heavy rain throughout the preceding morning and afternoon, the sun came out shortly before the event started and weather conditions were excellent for the entire evening. There was great praise from everyone for the very high standards of catering at the barbeque and we congratulate and thank sincerely the organisers and all those who helped prepare and dispense the food on the night.

GAA Summer Camps

Next week, starting on Monday, July 30th and ending on Friday August 3rd, the annual Cavan GAA Summer Camps will be held  in Cornafean GAA Park, and all boys and girls aged   between 7 and 14 years are welcome to come along and enjoy the fun.

The week's activities will be organised into two separate groups. The School of Excellence Camps cater exclusively for boys and girls aged 12-14 years while the Summer Camps are for boys and girls aged 7-12 years.

Both camps will cover Gaelic football, hurling and camogie and among the many attractions are visits from many of Cavan's senior intercounty stars, raffles for special GAA items, the chance to take part in many fun games and competitions and to learn how to play football, hurling, and camogie. All those taking part will receive posters, and stickers, as well as a specially-designed Cavan GAA T-Shirt and Baseball Cap

Hundreds of boys and girls throughout Co. Cavan have already enjoyed the earlier camps this Summer in venues such as Breffni Park, Shercock, Bailieboro, Cootehill,  Belturbet and Kilnaleck and there are high hopes this year's camp in Cornafean will be equally successful.

For further details contact: Martin Cahill, Chairman, Games Development Committee, Cavan County GAA Board (049) 5336643, James Lovett, Coaching and Games Promotion Officer, Cavan County GAA Board (086) 2457216 or (049) 4361032, or any member of the committee of Cornafean GFC.

Cemetery Sunday

The Blessing of the Graves ceremony in Drumcor Cemetery this year will  take place on 29th July after 10am Mass, and the Blessing of the Graves in Killeshandra will take place on next Sunday after 11am Mass.

Golf Classic

Cornafean GFC are holding their annual Golf Classic on Saturday 4th August in Cornafean Golf Course. This has been a very popular event in recent years and this year's Classic promises to be as equally successful and enjoyable.

The proceeds of the Golf Classic will be in aid of the new sports hall development at the club grounds in Cornafean. While the club has obtained some government funding for the project, there still is a need to raise a substantial amount of money to allow the project to be completed.

The organisers are hoping from a great response from individuals, businesses and companies, who are being invited to enter a team or contribute sponsorship towards the event.

The cost per team of four is £50 to include light refreshments. Attractive prizes will be on offer to the winning teams. Tees and Greens can be sponsored for £25 each. Sponsors will be posted on the Tees and Greens and will be publicly acknowledged and displayed on our community website www.cornafean.com

A Time Sheet will be in operation on the day and teams may be entered by telephone to Dominic King, Drumcrow, (049 4337415) / (087 293 6757) or to Padraig Cosgrove, Corlismore (049 4337094) or by email to golf@cornafean.com

A limited number of tee times are also available on Friday evening 3rd August, starting at 5pm, in order to facilitate teams who cannot play on Saturday.

Cornafean Local Notes 16 July 2001

Kilmore Summer Barbeque

A Summer Barbeque will be held in Kilmore Parochial Hall on Friday 20th July from 8 o'clock onwards.

The evenings proceedings will start at 7pm with a Car Treasure Hunt, which starts from the Hall. There will be a Disco from 9.30pm to 11.30pm with Old Time Dancing from 11.30pm to 12.30am.

Dramatic Draw

The Cornafean footballers started their 2001 Intermediate Championship campaign on Sunday afternoon last when they drew with Lavey in a dramatic first round game on a scoreline of 3-9 each. The game will long be remembered for its unbelievable and heart-stopping finale, during which the Cornafean lads overturned an eight-point deficit with no less than three dramatic goals.

Cornafean had the better of the exchanges in the first half, but the concession of a soft goal was to prove costly for the Reds, and this goal helped Lavey to finish the first half on level pegging with the scoreboard reading Cornafean 0-7 Lavey 1-4.

The game was nip and tuck during the third quarter but a Lavey victory seemed inevitable when they scored two more goals in quick succession midway through the second half.

This put them into a commanding lead, and they still led by 3-8 to 0-9  with less than ten minutes remaining. Cornafean's woes were compounded when they lost full-forward Art McSeain through injury shortly afterwards but the "Reds" refused to die.

Philip Wilson

The introduction of substitute Philip Wilson for McSeain proved to be the turning point of the game. The imposing forward did not score in his nine minutes on the field but otherwise his contribution was immense. The clearly rattled Lavey defence had enormous problems in coping with him, and Wilson quickly played a major part in two attacking moves, both of which culminated in corner forward Thanasie Kaldanis grabbing opportunist goals in swift succession. Lavey still held the upper hand and enjoyed the majority of possession in the closing stages but a revitalised Cornafean were looking dangerous on every attack and the siege was finally lifted when Val Sheridan pulled on a scrappy clearance to shoot to the net for Cornafean's third goal. Cornafean were now level and they held on for a deserved, if fortunate, draw during the three tension-filled minutes of injury-time.

Despite the changeable weather, and the competing attractions of the televised Leinster and Munster finals, there was a large attendance of locals in Plunkett Park, Kilnaleck for the game. Cornafean now go on to play Drumalee and Drung in their remaining Round 1 games, with two of the four teams in the group qualifying for the quarter-finals. The Cornafean players will know that they will need to produce much more consistent displays in these remaining games if they are to advance to the knockout stages and they should not be lacking any motivation to succeed in the coming weeks.

Junior C's Day Out

Last Wednesday night's Junior C Championship game between Cornafean and Drumalee was postponed and the game has been refixed for this Saturday night in Drumalee at 7.30pm. This game will be a useful opportunity for the Cornafean management to try out a number of members of the senior squad who did not get the chance to play in the Intermediate Championship game on Sunday. The game will also serve as a sort of "dress rehearsal" for the upcoming meeting of the clubs' seniors in the Intermediate Championship.

Cluain Eois Aris

Following the excitement of the Ulster Final on last Sunday week, the Cavan footballers have another tough assignment next weekend when they play Derry in Round 4 of the All Ireland Qualifiers. The game will take place in St. Tiernach's Park, Clones on next Sunday, 22nd July at 3.30pm. There was keen debate among local followers on Sunday night when the draw was made live on RTE television by GAA President Sean McCague.

Derry and Cavan have met on three previous occasions in the past two years. In June 1999, the Blues forced a draw in an exciting game in Casement Park only for Derry to crush the Cavan challenge in the replay in Breffni Park, where they repeated the dose in a runaway victory in last year's Ulster first round game. However, Sunday's game promises to be much closer as Cavan have made great strides in the meantime, culminating in their achievement in almost winning this year's Ulster title, while Derry have lost the services of several key stalwarts such as Joe Brolly, Seamus and Henry Downey and Kieran McKeever.

It promises to be a real cracker and Breffni fans will be hoping that Cavan can once again confound the media pundits and earn a place in the quarter-finals.

Senior Championship Game

On next Friday evening, the St Joseph's amalgamation team take on St Mary's in the preliminary round of the Cavan Senior Championship. The St. Joseph's team is drawn from the playing panels of the Cornafean, Kileshandra and Arva clubs and has made a strong impact in the Senior Championship in recent years, most notably last year when they beat St. Finbarrs in the first round before being defeated by Mullahoran in a playoff for a quarter-final place. The throw-in on Friday evening is at 8pm in Kilnaleck, and not in Breffni Park as originally stated here

Cornafean Local Notes 9 July 2001

St Joseph's Go Down in Under-16 Final

On Saturday afternoon last, the St. Joseph's under-16 footballers were beaten by St. Finbarr's (Drung/Kill) in the Under-16 League final, played in Killygarry. The St. Joseph's team, with players drawn from the Cornafean, Killeshandra and Arva clubs, went into the game with high hopes of success after their recent impressive semi-final win against Killygarry.

However, the final itself turned out to be a much more difficult assignment for the local team, and a strong St. Finbarrs team had the better of the exchanges for most of the game, and finished the match with seven points to spare.

Still, the St. Joseph's team can take great heart from their achievement in reaching the final and they can look forward with confidence to the Under-16 Championship later in the year.

Wedding Bells in Tramore

Congratulations to Jimmy McGibney, Corlis, and Laura Murphy, Tramore, Co. Waterford, who were married in Carbally Church, Tramore on last Saturday afternoon. A reception was held afterwards at the Majestic Hotel, Tramore. On Sunday, a group of the wedding guests re-convened with the happy couple at the hotel to watch Cavan take on Tyrone in the Ulster Final but Cavan’s narrow defeat failed to dampen the spirits of the party.

Glory but no trophy

Last Sunday's Ulster Final in Clones was a huge occasion for the many GAA followers in the locality. In the days leading up to the game, locating tickets was a major headache for many supporters but happily almost everyone was catered for by the weekend.

The game itself proved to be a dramatic affair with a plucky Cavan side playing "out of their skins" against the hot favourites from Tyrone in the first half. Unfortunately, the tide turned in the second half but Cavan still could have won the game had they converted a couple of the scoring chances which went abegging during that latter period.

Having now confounded the pundits, and shown that they can be as good as any team in the country, Cavan will be looking forward to the draw next Sunday for the 5th round in the All Ireland Qualifiers series, which will be played on next Saturday week. Cavan’s opponents in that game will be drawn from the four winners of last weekend’s Qualifier games -  Derry, Galway, Sligo or Westmeath.

Championship Fixture

Cornafean play Lavey in the first round of the 2001 Intermediate Championship on Sunday next 15th July in Kilnaleck. The throw-in will be at 3.30pm and not at 8pm as previously reported..

This will be a crucial game for the Cornafean team who have been somewhat inconsistent in their seven outings to date in this year's league. Obviously, local followers will be casting their minds back to September 2000 when the Cornafean lads took the Junior crown in Breffni Park, but past glories will count for nought in this year's Championship.

Lavey are a good side who will present a formidable challenge to Cornafean in this game. They enjoyed a strong run in last year's Intermediate Championship before losing narrowly to Swanlinbar in the quarter-final in Breffni Park.

This fixture will revive memories of the three memorable games between Cornafean and Lavey in the 1995 Intermediate Championship. There was little between the teams in their first round clash in Terry Coyle Park which ended in a draw. A few weeks later, the teams had to meet again in a playoff for a quarter-final place. This was a thrilling game, played in perfect conditions on a lovely summer evening. The teams were deadlocked when the game finished and another half-hour of extra time failed to separate the sides.

Powered by former county star Seamus Donohoe, Lavey had the edge in a relatively low-key replay, which they won by 1-6 to 1-3.

The Cornafean Vintage Association are busy preparing for this year's Annual Vintage Ploughing and Field Day, which will take place in Cornafean on Saturday 25th August.

Cornafean Local Notes 2 July 2001

Impressive Semi-final win for Under-16's

The St. Joseph's Under-16 footballers recorded a great win in the Under-16 League Semi Final on Sunday when they beat opponents Killygarry by eight points. The local team, with representatives from the Cornafean, Killeshandra and Arva clubs, were boosted by a first-half goal from Cornafean's Noel Keeley  and held a slender lead of one point at half-time. The game was very much in the balance until the final quarter until St. Joseph's finally pulled ahead of a determined Killygarry, with a late scoring burst, which yielded a second and a further three points.

Six Cornafean players starred for St. Joseph's on this occasion: Mark Johnson, who had a great game at full forward, Cormac Geoghegan, Liam Duignan, Andrew Smith, Stephen Harrington and goalscorer Noel Keeley.

There was a large attendance of supporters from Cornafean at Sheelin Park, Ballymachugh for the game. No doubt, there will be similarly strong local support for the St. Joseph's lads at the final which is scheduled for 2pm on Saturday next in Breffni Park, Cavan. Their opponents in the final are not yet known as the other semi-finalists, Derinacrieve and St. Finbarr's, drew in their semi-final at the weekend, and these teams must now meet again to decide who will play St. Josephs in the final.

Development Association Meeting

Cornafean Community Development Association are holding a meeting in McSeains on next Monday night, 2nd July at 9.30.  This meeting was originally fixed for last Monday night but was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances. Ulster Final this Sunday

More Praise for Cornafean Online

The Cornafean Online website received a very positive review in last Monday's Irish Independent (25th June). In their "Netwatch" column, the newspaper's internet reviewer Terry Kavanagh made the following comments:

"Local community sites range from the appallingly twee to the surprisingly useful. Cornafean Online falls firmly into the latter category. The Co. Cavan community may be best known as the home of Olympic athlete Catherina McKiernan, but there's far more going on in the area than just following the exploits of its most famous daughter. Cornafean Online boasts a healthy GAA section, though naturally athletics (plus a few other sports) are also featured, and there's plenty on what's happening in the local community. An excellent example of how the web can bring a small locality to the world."
