Mr. James McKiernan

There was widespread sadness in the locality in recent days on the death of James McKiernan, Cornafean who died on Sunday January 11th in Newtownforbes Nursing Home. Aged in his mid-eighties, James had been in declining health for some time. A member of a well-known local family, James will be remembered as a very pleasant, friendly and mild-mannered man. Throughout his lifetime, he played a very active role in community activities in the locality and he was deeply involved in several local organisations. There were large attendances at the Removal of his remains to Coronea Church on last Monday evening and at his Funeral Mass on Tuesday, with burial in the local cemetery.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his sisters Mary, Katie and Agnes, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Scór na nOg Final

Best wishes to the Belturbet, Templeport and Drumalee clubs who are all represented in next Saturday evening’s Ulster Scór na nOg Finals which take place in the renowned Silverbridge, Co. Armagh venue. With Cavan represented in no less than five competitions, hopefully a number of provincial titles will be heading Cavan’s way at the end of the night.

Mea Culpa!

The post-Christmas gremlins were out in force in our column last week when we erroneously reported the winner of the Stars in Your Eyes Christmas Show in Cornafean as Mick Masterson, Bruse. While Mick did a fabulous job in entertaining the large attendance during the show, it was in fact his near-neighbour and friend Mike Coyle who stole the show with his own version of Joe Dolan’s renowned style and panache. Once again we congratulate Mike, Mick and the other entertainers who helped to make the night such a success and we also salute the organising committee under the direction of Ciaran Weir on their efficient organisation of the event.

Cornafean Notes 5th January 2004

Caroline is new Games Promotion Officer

Congratulations to local woman Caroline Crowe who was recently appointed by the Cavan County GAA Board to the position of full-time Games Promotion Officer within the county. In her new role, Caroline will be responsible for the administration of coaching and games promotion strategies in Co. Cavan, succeeding the very popular James Lovett who served in this capacity for nine years until recently. Caroline already has several years coaching experience both at county level and within Cornafean GAA club and her appointment has been met with widespread delight. She was enthusiastically welcomed by officers and delegates when she was introduced by Chairman George Cartwright to the recent Cavan GAA Convention and her strong and confident address to the Convention bodes well for her ability and determination to succeed in the position. We wish her every success.

Active Age Club Christmas Party

The Cornafean Active Age Club are holding a Gala Christmas Party in McSeain’s Lounge, on Sunday 18th January at 3.00pm. A four course dinner will be served and entertainment will be provided by a host of local celebrities. Tickets are a very reasonable €5.00 each and those wishing to attend are asked to purchase their tickets by the closing date of this Friday 9th January. In recent weeks, the organising committee has circulated invitations to households in the locality. However, it is always difficult to distribute invitations to everyone and the organisers heartily welcome everyone to the party regardless of whether they received a formal invitation. If you are interested in attending the event, please contact Tommy O’Rourke at 049 4337205 or Maura Sheridan at 049 4337469.

Mr. Seamus McNerney

The entire community in Cornafean was deeply stunned and saddened by the tragic death following an accident on St. Stephen’s Day, of Seamus McNerney, Coronea. A native of Legga, Moyne, Seamus was in his mid-40s and worked for many years as a long-distance truck driver, transporting goods throughout Ireland, the UK and Continental Europe. He was well-known as a very friendly likeable and hardworking man, and the news of his untimely death was met with widespread shock in the locality over the festive season. As a mark of respect to his memory, the annual Cornafean GAA Charity Game was postponed on St. Stephen’s Day and huge crowds of mourners gathered at the Removal of his remains from Cavan General Hospital to St. Mary’s Church, Legga on Sunday 28th December and again at his Funeral Mass on Monday – a sign of the esteem in which he was held by everyone who knew him.

We extend our deepest sympathy to his wife Helen, son Shane, daughter Yvonne, mother, brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and other relatives on his tragic passing.

Stars in Your Eyes Success

The "Stars in Your Eyes" Christmas Show attracted a capacity audience to McSeains, Cornafean on Sunday 28th December and the event proved to be a resounding success with a fabulous variety of entertainment from no less than thirteen performers playing the roles of starts such as Joe Dolan, Garth Brooks, Gloria Gaynor, Elvis Presley, Van Morrison, Johnny Cash, and Dolly Parton. At the end of the night, the audience voted Mick Masterson (Joe Dolan) as the winner, but as MC Paddy McDermott said on the night, all of the thirteen participants were the real winners, having rehearsed and prepared for the show ever since late September, often on several occasions each week.

The hard work and effort of everyone involved was clearly reflected in the quality of the show. The organisers extend sincere thanks and congratulations to all of the participants, the backing singers and musicians, sound man Michael Callery, MC Paddy McDermott and everyone else who helped to make the night such an outstanding success.

GAA Season Resumes

A meeting of the Executive Committee of Cornafean GAA club will be held in McSeains on this Friday night, starting at 9.30pm. Players are asked to note that training for the 2004 season commences on next Friday night week, 16th January in the clubrooms. Club membership is now open for existing and new members for a limited period and those interested are asked to contact registrar Seamus Doyle or another committee member for further details.

Meanwhile there was strong local interest last weekend in the Cavan senior team’s 2004 debut in the new-look Dr. McKenna Cup where Eamon Coleman’s experimental side enjoyed a good win over Queen’s University, Belfast in a resplendent O’Raghallaigh Park, Kingscourt. This was Cavan’s first competitive outing since their disheartening Championship defeat at the hands of Fermanagh last June and the Breffni boys have the chance to make some amends next Sunday when they meet the Erne County side in round 2 of the McKenna Cup, once again at the Kingscourt venue.

Scór Preparations

Preparations are underway in Cornafean for the annual Senior Scór competitions which this year are scheduled to take place in late January and early February, earlier than in previous years. On last Friday night, a large attendance enjoyed a traditional Irish Night in McSeains in aid of the local Scór teams and according to reports a good night was had by all.
