In view of the great interest to date in the new club, it was decided to hold a second meeting to allow as many people as possible to have their say in the running of the new club. The news of the death earlier this
week of the famed traditional musician Eugene Leddy, Butlersbridge was met with
sadness by his many friends and admirers in Cornafean. For many years, Eugene
led a very successful ceili group, the Eugene Leddy Ceili Band, who were
regarded as one of the finest and most popular ceili groups in the country.
Along with other leading groups of the era, such as the Fore Ceili Band, the
Colmcille ceili band and the Moate Ceili Band, they were regular visitors to
Cornafean during the heyday of the old Cornafean Hall. The Hall, officially
known as Aras Fionnain, was a leading dancing venue of those times and large
crowds would come from far and near to Cornafean for the regular ceili dances.
These were the days before the likes of Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly and others revolutionised the international music scene, and despite the many changes in popular entertainment in the meantime, the culture of traditional music so ably fostered by Eugene Leddy and his contemporaries remains as strong as ever among Irish people, all over the world.
Last year, Cornafean GFC hosted a special Irish Night in Cornafean to honour Eugene Leddy, and his contribution to traditional music in the locality. Eugene, who was accompanied by several members of his family, thoroughly enjoyed the night and was glad to avail of the opportunity to meet and play music with many of his old friends in Cornafean. At the time, the local club were the holders of the Cavan Junior Championship trophy, the Sean Leddy Memorial Cup, named in honour of Eugene’s son Sean, who sadly died suddenly a few years ago.
We extend sincere sympathy to Eugene's family on his passing.

L
ast Sunday, 6th January, the local Community Development Association held a special Family Walks day in Cornafean, which attracted a great turnout of over fifty walkers, on a clear, dry afternoon, which was ideal for outdoor pursuits. The organisers had been extremely busy from early morning in erecting temporary directional signs on each of the five walking routes. The walkers assembled outside McSeain’s pub and they were led in style by piper Sean Kelly for the first few furlongs of their stroll. Some walkers opted for the shorter routes of 2-3 miles length while some hardier souls opted for the longer routes, up to six miles long.
After the walkers returned on their circuitous routes to Cornafean, they were treated to snacks, beverages and musical entertainment in McSeains. There was great praise among the many participants for the local Development Association, who had organised the event in such an efficient manner. Indeed many of the walkers expressed their intentions to take to the scenic highways and byways of the locality for weekly keep-fit walks over the coming weekends.
Sunday’s event had been originally planned for the previous weekend but had to be postponed due to the Arctic weather conditions at the time.
The Cornafean GFC New Year's Eve Dance was held in McSeain's on last Monday night week, and a large attendance braved the snow and ice on the roads to ring in 2002 in style. Reports indicate that a good time was had by all and there was special praise for the high standard of catering on the night.
Cornafean GFC held their annual Charity Football Match on the afternoon of St. Stephen's Day. A total of £275 was raised on the day, in aid of the John Paul Carey Trust Fund, which has been set up to assist a young Co. Kildare footballer, John Paul Carey, who suffered seriously disabling injuries while playing Gaelic Football with his club Carbery, in June 1999.
Last Sunday, Pairc Naoimh Fionnain hosted one of the first competitive football games of 2002 in Co. Cavan when our neighbours Ballinagh met Ballyhaise in the Division 2 final of the 2001 Cathal Brady Reserve League. The Ballinagh lads won a tight game by a single point – 2-9 to 2-8 at the finish.
Membership of Cornafean GFC is now open for 2002. The membership fee is €10 for adults and €5 for students. Please contact Padraig Gormley, Treasurer for further details.
Sunday December 2nd last was a historic day for the local Church of Ireland, with the visit of the Bishop of Kilmore, Dr. Kenneth Clarke to the Church at Drumcoghill. This was the first time ever for a Bishop to attend a Sunday Service at this historic Church, and an enthusiastic band of volunteers were kept busy re-painting and decorating the Church in the weeks leading up to his visit.
There has been much praise in local households for the 2002 Kilmore Parish Calendar which has recently been produced by Fr. Eugene Clarke PP and his Pastoral Committee at St. Patrick’s Church Drumcor.
The A4-size calendar contains a wealth of information and useful contact details for the various Church, social, sporting and other voluntary organisations in the area. No less than fifty three phone numbers are listed on the calendar which in itself is a wonderful testimony to the strength and diversity of the local voluntary effort in our locality. At the time of writing, a limited number of calendars are still available in Drumcor Church.
