Cornafean Notes 28 February 2005

Scór a success in Local Hall

Last Friday night was a historic occasion in the locality as the new Cornafean Sports Hall hosted the opening round of this year’s county Scór competiton. The evening proved a great success with a large attendance enjoying a great night of entertainment in the warm and comfortable surroundings of the new Hall. The standard of competition and entertainment was high in all disciplines and the venue itself also drew great praise from many first-time visitors to the Hall. The event also attracted a large turnout of home supporters, and some seasoned Scór followers reckoned that this was one of the largest attendances at a first round Scór competition in the county for many years.

Cornafean fielded acts in all eight disciplines on the night and the hard work of the various teams and mentors in recent weeks in preparing for the show was evident in each act. When the results of the first round competition were announced on Saturday night in Arva, it emerged that the local teams had qualified for the County Final in six of the eight competitions: Ceili & Set Dancing, Novelty Act, Recitation, Instrumental Music and the Question Time.

The County Final takes place this Saturday night in Killeshandra. Following the high standard of entertainment in Cornafean and Arva last weekend, the County Final promises another feast of entertainment. The Scór County Final is always a very special occasion, indeed one of the highlights of the year for many followers. We wish the best of good luck to all Cornafean participants and hopefully the locals will be among the winners when the awards are presented on Saturday night.

The late Tommy Scott

There was widespread sadness in the locality last week on the unexpected death, aged 81, of Tommy Scott, Drumcon who died on Sunday February 20th at Cavan General Hospital after a short illness. Tommy was a decent, quiet but very sociable and friendly individual. He was widely known for his many cures for various ailments and people flocked to him from long distances for some of his cures, notably his treatment for the sprain. A farmer for all his working life, Tommy had a great interest in horses and ponies and regularly kept horses on his farm in Drumcon. He was always very obliging and helpful to his neighbours in the locality. Sadly predeceased by his sister Peggy only a few months ago, Tommy was the last surviving member of the Scott family whose presence in Drumcon extended back a long number of generations.

There was a large attendance of mourners at his Funeral Service in Killeshandra Parish Church last Tuesday. We extend deepest sympathy to his relatives, neighbours and friends.

Mr Padraig McNamee

The death of Padraig McNamee, Marahill, Crossdoney was met with universal shock and sadness in the local community last week. Padraig died in Cavan General Hospital on Thursday of last week. Although he had suffered from poor health for much of his life, his unexpected death came as a great shock to everyone who knew him.

In his youth Padraig was a noted footballer both with Cornafean, whom he represented with distinction in the early days of juvenile football in the 1950s, and as a senior player in the early and mid-1960’s and also with St Patrick’s College, Cavan with whom he won a McRory Cup medal as a full-forward in 1961. After completing his education, Padraig was based in Castlebar as an Agricultural Officer for a number of years before retuning to work in this capacity in Cavan. Sadly, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at a young age and he was confined to a wheelchair because of his illness for most of the last three decades of his life. Even as he suffered from the effects of his devastating illness, Padraig always remained a very cheerful, welcoming and friendly man. He maintained a great interest in learning and reading throughout his lifetime, especially in the area of history and heritage. Despite the terrible effects of his illness, Padraig occasionally attended cultural and social functions in the locality, which he very much enjoyed.

Padraig will be sadly missed by his brothers, Frank (Dun Laoghaire), Peter (Mullingar) and Michael (Drogheda), sisters Moira (Florida), Breedge (Killeshandra), Nancy (Sandycove), Cathy, Geraldine (Mullingar) and Margaret (London), his uncle James Reynolds (Newtownforbes), his brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews and other relatives, to whom we extend our deepest sympathies. He will also be greatly missed by those who assisted and cared for him so kindly during his illness not least his great friends Owen McCabe and Brid Anne Moran amongst many others. There were large attendances at the Removal of his remains to St Patrick’s Chuch, Drumcor on last Friday evening and at his Funeral Mass on Saturday last with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Sympathy

We extend deepest sympathy to Mrs Teresa O’Donoghue, Corr on the death of her sister Anna Ryan whose funeral took place in Clonaphilip Church, Killinkere on last Friday.

New Mass Times

From next weekend onwards, a new timetable of Saturday evening and Sunday Masses will take effect in local churches in the Killeshandra parish area. On Saturday evenings in Winter time, Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva at 7.00pm and in St Brigid’s Church, Killeshandra at 8.00pm. In the Summer time, these times will revert to 7.30pm and 8.30pm respectively.

On Sunday mornings, Mass will commence at 9.30am in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Coronea, at 10.30am in the Church of the Sacred Heart, Arva and at 11.30pm in St Brigid’s Church, Killeshandra. While these changes have been introduced in order to compensate for the shortage of priests in the diocese, they now offer local parishioners an unprecedented choice of Mass times every weekend.

Irish Table Quiz

The Cavan GAA Irish Language Table Quiz was held in the Hotel Kilmore on last Thursday evening with Cornafean represented by two teams. The event was a very enjoyable one for all taking part and after a close contest the Cuchullains team of Leslie Fox, Joe Mellett, Tony Meade and Peadar McCabe emerged victorious with a single point to spare over the Cornafean A team of Brian Doyle, Rita Marttin, Michael Dinneny and Tommy McGibney. The Cornafean B team of Oliver Gormley, Paddy McDermott, Jim Hannon and Kevin Geoghegan finished in third place. All three teams qualify for the Ulster Final of the competition which will be held in Eglish Co. Tyrone on next Friday night. We wish every
