There was deep shock and sadness in the locality on the death on Saturday last, 23rd February, of Mr. Bert Flood, Lismoreville, Crossdoney. He died suddenly on Saturday last on a weekend visit to Ennis, Co. Clare for a musical event. He was pre-deceased some years ago by his wife Nan.
A member of one of Cavan’s most prominent families, Bert operated his own butchering business in Cavan Town for many years. He was a widely regarded as a very friendly, and pleasant man, who was held in very high esteem by everyone who knew him. He was particularly noted for his interest in the traditional means of travel by pony and trap and he took great pleasure in regularly driving a pony and trap along the highways and byways of the locality. He also kept a fine collection of antique carriages and traps which he himself had restored over the years.
There were large attendances at the Removal of his remains to the Ballinagh Church on Monday evening last and at the Funeral Mass on Tuesday with burial in Killygarry Cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to his sons Bernard, Louis, Simon and Gareth, daughters Anne, Frances, Siobhan, Sinead and Agnes, sisters, brother, brothers-in-law, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, grandchildren and other relatives.
The recent spell of poor weather put paid to the planned start of the Cavan All County Football League last weekend. Like all the other games, Cornafean’s scheduled fixture with Mountnugent was postponed to a future date and the League is now unlikely to proceed until weather conditions show considerable improvement

Cornafean took part in the first round of Scor 2001 last Friday night in Killeshandra Community Centre, and put up good performances in each of the eight competitions. There was a good local attendance among the reasonable-sized crowd which braved the wintry weather conditions for an enjoyable night’s entertainment. On Saturday night, the first-round winners were announced and there was some satisfaction for Cornafean, who qualified for the County final in five categories, Ceili Dancing, Solo Singing, Ballad Group, Recitation, and Question Time. The County Final is on next Friday night 1st March again in Killeshandra Community Centre, and no doubt there will be huge attendance there, for an event which is always special for followers of Irish music, dance, song and general entertainment.

a great Jackpot prize of €6,000 in last Sunday night’s Cornafean GAA Lotto
draw. Brendan’s win is one of the highest Jackpot win for some time in the
Cornafean GAA Lotto and Brendan’s many friends in the locality will welcome
his good luck on his success.
Cornafean Walking Club is holding its first organised
walk on Sunday February 24 and members are hoping that walkers from all over the
area will step out for the event. The
walk will start at 2pm from McSeains and refreshments will be served afterwards.
Nearly thirty people attended the second meeting of the walking club last
week where a number of ideas for the club were discussed, and the organising
committee have been delighted so far with the level of local interest in the new
club.
The next meeting of the club will be held on
Thursday March 7 in McSeains at 9pm. New
members are welcome.
On next Friday night, 22nd February, Cornafean will take part in the first round of this year’s Cavan Senior Scor competition, in Killeshandra Community Centre. Over the past few weeks, the Cornafean acts have been busy preparing for Saturday’s competition, and we wish them every success on this occasion. Both Senior Scor and Scor na nOg have always attracted great support from Cornafean down through the years and no doubt the traditionally strong local support will be once again out in force on the night. The show begins at 8.30pm. The other teams competing on the same night will be Killeshandra, Arva, Ballinagh, Cavan Gaels, Crosserlough, Mullahoran and Lacken. The county finals will be held on Friday March 1st, again in Killeshandra Community Centre.
The Cornafean footballers will be
returning to competitive action for 2002 next weekend when they entertain
visitors Mountnugent in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain. After their long winter
hibernation, the Cornafean lads will be anxious to get off to a winning note on
their first outing of the season.
In the corresponding game last
March, Mountnugent had the better of the exchanges in a game that had earlier
been postponed due to fears surrounding the various outbreaks of Foot &
Mouth disease. On that occasion, Cornafean held a comfortable three-point lead
at half time but frittered away that advantage with a poor second-half
performance, while their opponents produced a gritty display to finish
convincing winners by two points, 0-11 to 0-9.
Cornafean will undoubtedly be
hoping to reverse that result on this occasion and we wish them every success.
The Cornafean Vintage Ploughing Association are holding
their annual Pancake Night social in McSeain’s on next Tuesday night, 12th
February. This is always a very popular event each year and all support will be
greatly appreciated.

Thursday night, February 7, the second meeting of the newly established
Cornafean Walking Club will take place in McSeain's at 9pm.
Anyone interested in walking as a pastime is invited to come along.
The meeting follows on from a very successful meeting held recently to
gauge the level of interest in setting up such a club.
Nearly twenty people from Cornafean and the surrounding parishes attended
and the idea of setting up a club was enthusiastically received.
A committee was selected and if was decided to hold a second meeting to allow as many people as possible to have their say in the running of the new club. So whether you want to power-walk, stroll of simply take advantage of the longer evenings, come along to McSeain's on Thursday night.
