There was deep sadness in the locality last weekend on the death of Miss Eva Brady, Marahill. A native of Marahill, Eva lived for much of her working life in Antrim town but returned home to live in Marahill when she retired a number of years ago. She will be remembered as a decent, quiet and friendly lady. There were large attendances at the removal of her remains to St. Patrick’s Church, Drumcor on Saturday evening last and at the Funeral Mass on Sunday morning. On behalf of the entire community, we express our deepest sympathy to her brother Packie, nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Well done to Catherina McKiernan who was a member of the Irish Ladies team who won Silver for Ireland in the team event at last Sunday’s European Cross Country Championships in Edinburgh. Although Catherina’s preparations for the race were badly disrupted by flu in recent weeks, she produced a determined effort to finish the race in 34th place. Her achievement in doing so was enough to secure 2nd place in the team event for the Irish team, which was led by Sonia O’Sullivan.

On Saturday night last , Cornafean were represented in six competitions in the Cavan 2003/04 Scór na nÓg County Finals in Killeshandra Community Centre. The hall was packed to capacity for a magnificent night's entertainment and the local competitors did themselves proud in each category. At the end of the night, there was some local disappointment when none of the county titles came our way. With a little extra luck, Cornafean could have captured the honours in several competitions. Probably the most dramatic contest of the night was in the Question Time competition when the Cornafean GFC and Ladies GFC teams took on Drumalee and Drumlane. Following a tightly-fought quiz, the Cornafean Ladies GFC team were level on 52 points with Drumalee with the other two teams closely behind. In a nerve-racking finale Drumalee took the honours by a single question on the tie-break round. The Cornafean acts were similarly unlucky in a number of other categories but hope springs eternal and our youthful representative will no doubt be tasting success in years to come.
We congratulate all the county winners in the eight competitions and wish them the very best of success in the Ulster Semi Finals which take place in Lisnaskea this Saturday night.
Last Thursday night, the local Active Age Club staged their popular comic sketch “A Cornafean Homecoming” at a concert in the Lavey Inn, and their performance was met with rapturous acclaim by the large attendance present. Quite a number of local supporters and club members made the journey to Lavey for the event and by all accounts a great time was had by all. It is hoped that the show will be restaged in a local venue over the Christmas period. Congratulations to one and all on yet another great achievement for our very lively and dynamic Active Age Club that have gone from strength to strength since its formation.
