Charity Game
On St. Stephen’s Day, Cornafean GFC are hosting their annual charity football match in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain. The proceeds of this year’s event will be in aid of the local
Senior Citizens Party, which was such a great success when held in McSeain’s two weeks ago. All players are asked to be at the park by 2pm on St. Stephen’s Day, and the game will commence at 2.30pm. This promises to be a very enjoyable occasion, and all players and supporters are welcome.
County Officers re-elected
On Sunday last, Cornafean’s George Cartwright was unanimously re-elected Chairman of the Cavan G.A.A. County Board, at the Annual County Convention, which took place in the Hotel Kilmore. At the recent Cavan Camogie Convention, Mrs Teresa McGibney, Corlis was re-elected Secretary of the County Camogie Board. We wish both George and Teresa every continued success in their respective posts in 2001.
New Year’s Eve Dance
The annual Cornafean GFC New Year’s Eve dance will take place on Sunday 31st December, in McSeain’s. As in previous years, there will be musical entertainment from Ian Pickens and his band. This has been a very popular event with local people for many years, and this year’s dance is not to be missed.
Santa Claus
There was great excitement in Crossdoney on last Saturday afternoon next, when Santa Claus made his customary visit to the village, where he was greeted by a large gathering of local children, to whom he later distributed gifts. The festive atmosphere in the village was enhanced by the impressive Christmas lighting, which was erected recently by members of the local Christmas Tree Committee. Well done to everyone concerned.

Scor Na nOg
A large group of Cornafean supporters were in Killeshandra Community Centre last Saturday night, when the local club was represented in two competitions (Instrumental Music and Question Time) in the County Finals of Scor na nOg. Although no honours went Cornafean’s way on this occasion, all the local performers did themselves proud.
In the Instrumental Music category, the Cornafean group were narrowly defeated by Killygarry, while in the Question Time, the Cornafean trio featured strongly in a tightly-fought competition, but rivals Swanlinbar emerged victorious in the end.
Cornafean had some consolation when they were awarded 3rd place in the "Overall Best Club" Award, which is awarded annually to the club with the best overall performance in the first rounds of the competition. This award went to our neighbours Killeshandra, and we congratulate them on this achievement, and on their win in the Solo Singing competition.
Santa Claus
On Saturday afternoon next, Santa Claus will make his annual visit to Crossdoney. Santa will arrive in the village at 3pm and he will meet all the children of the area and distribute gifts to them. This is always a very exciting occasion in Crossdoney as the Christmas season approaches and the local Christmas Tree Committee were busy in the last week, erecting Christmas lights and other decorations in the village.
Senior Citizens Party
The annual Cornafean Senior Citizens Party was held in McSeains on last Sunday afternoon. This year’s event was a great success with a large number of senior citizens being treated to a fine meal and a varied programme of entertainment. Great credit is due to the organising committee and those who helped in any way.
New Year’s Eve Dance
Cornafean GFC are again running their annual New Year’s Eve Dance this year in McSeains with music by Ian Pickens. This is always a one of the social highlights of the year in the area, and is especially popular with many people home for the Christmas season.

Scor Na nOg
There was a large turnout of Cornafean supporters in Killeshandra Community Centre on Sunday afternoon last, when the local club took part in the first round of this year’s Scor na nOg. competition. The event attracted a huge attendance, reckoned by many to be the highest ever for a Scor competition in Cavan, and this is surely a sign that the popularity of Scor is now at an all-time high.
The standard of entertainment was very high in each event with teams representing Killeshandra, Drumlane, Crosserlough, Mountnugent and Lacken Ladies GFC also taking part. The capacity audience had much praise for the host club, Killeshandra, for having the venue well organised and fully heated for patrons, despite the inclement weather outside on the day.
Cornafean were represented in all eight competitions, and it was heartening to see the youthful Cornafean participants, many of whom are still attending Primary School, performing so well in front of such a large gathering. The wonderful performances of all the local acts are a reflection of the many weeks of hard work and dedication in practising for each competition. Great credit is due to all our performers and also to the adult helpers who assisted in training and preparing the various acts.
At the end of the show, the first round winners were announced and there was joy for the Cornafean Question Time and Instrumental Music groups, who qualified for the county final, which will take place on Saturday evening, 9th December, again in Killeshandra. Community Centre, starting at 7pm. We wish them both the best of luck in the county decider and no doubt they will once again have great support from the locality on the night.
Unique Dance Show
On Friday night next, 8th December, the Diversity Dance Theatre, a dance troupe of performers from six different countries worldwide, will perform a special show in McSeain’s Cornafean. The group have been on a European Tour over the past few months playing in schools, colleges and charity events and their tour has brought them to such places as Budapest, Poland, Slovakia and the Expo 2000 event in Hanover. Their entertaining and unique dance show is based on a range of comic themes as well as covering a number of serious social issues such as racism, equality, poverty and the dangers of drug use. The group are all young members of the Bahai faith, between the ages of 17 and 22, and are currently staying with Earl and Sharon Redman, Urney, Ballinagh.
It is rare that people in Cornafean get the chance to see such a unique attraction in their own locality and this promises to be a very highly entertaining event for everyone.
Football A.G.M.
There was a large attendance of members at Annual General Meeting of Cornafean G.F.C., which was held last Saturday night in the clubrooms. This AGM was a special one for the club as no less than three county trophies were on display, the Sean Leddy Memorial Cup for the County Junior Championship, the Roinn D Under-14 Football Cup and the Perpetual Shield for Best Club in Scor na nOg, a mighty haul in a single year for a small rural club.
In her annual report, Club Secretary Karen McDermott recalled the club’s many achievements in 2000, including the capture of the Junior Championship title, the local under-14’s victory in the Roinn D Championship, and a number of county titles won in Scor, as well as reflecting on other successes including the club’s highly successful golf classic, the Millennium Mass at St Finian’s Mass Rock, and the fundraising event for the People in Need Telethon.
Club Chairman Packie Joe McGlade reflected on a wonderful year for the club, both on and off the field of play for the senior football team, and expressed the hope that the new season would herald renewed commitment by everyone in the club and further successes down the road. Incidentally, this AGM marked the 30th anniversary of Packie Joe’s first involvement as a senior officer in the club. He was first elected Club Secretary at the 1970/71 AGM and since then no-one has done as much on behalf of the club as Packie Joe. The club’s current high standing in all areas of its activities is a testament to the quality of his contribution over the past three decades.
Treasurer Padraig Gormley presented a comprehensive report on the club’s financial affairs over the past twelve months, reflecting a healthy financial position as the year draws to a close.
The AGM was attended by County Board Chairman George Cartwright and senior team manager Phil Cullen, who will continue in that role in 2001, no doubt hoping to lead the team onto further successes in the New Year.
The meeting also discussed the plans for the club’s new sports hall at the local grounds, as well as a number of other new initiatives in the area of coaching and related areas.
The main officer positions for the coming year are as follows: Chairman PJ McGlade, Vice-Chairman Padraig Cosgrove, Secretary Karen McDermott, Assistant Secretary Paddy McDermott, Treasurer Padraig Gormley, Assistant Treasurer Michael McGibney, PRO Tommy McGibney.

The Development Association are currently finalising plans to insert a time capsule into the Millennium monument, which was unveiled in Cornafean on January 1st last. As a small number of families have not yet submitted their lists, the final date for entry of these lists for the time capsule has been extended until this Friday 8th December. These should be given to Mrs. Anna Corcoran (Secretary) or any other committee member on or before Friday.
A good deal of progress has been made so far in the project to build the Cornafean local community website. It is hoped that this will be launched in the New Year. Everyone who may have suitable material or ideas for the proposed website is welcome to contribute to the project. Further information from any committee member.
