The Millennium Monument The Time Capsule Project Community Survey 1998/99 Public Awareness Meeting 1999
In the Winter of 1998-99, the Cornafean Community Association conducted a survey of the households in the Cornafean area. The purpose of this exercise was to give the local community the opportunity to identify what they saw as the key issues and needs facing their community and the potential opportunities for development within the Cornafean area. The findings were launched and discussed at a Public Meeting in Spring 1999. The Cornafean Community Council subsequently used the findings from the Survey and the Meeting to develop a Plan of Action in consultation with the local community to met the key needs and opportunities identified.
The Cornafean Development Association would like to thank all those households who completed and returned the questionnaire, as well as all those individuals who attended the Public Meeting.

35% of households have lived at their present address for over 50 years
Housing in Cornafean
50% of households felt additional housing needed in the area, ie. particularly for young people. the elderly and low income families 20.7% of households would be prepared to make land available for private housing development
Tourism in Cornafean
89.7%of households would encourage tourism
Hillwalking, angling and cycling were felt to offer great tourism potential for the Cornafean area
78% would support this development of B&B’s and 35% supported the idea of sites for caravans and tents. 85.3% felt visitors needed mors Information on the area
Environment & Infrastructure
86% of households are dissatisfied with the state of the roads
81.5% of households are dissatisfied with signage in the area
66.5% of households were happy with the re-opening of the Coronea Quarry, whilst 19.8% .were not and 23.7% hod no opinion 31.3% of households felt the Quarry posed a threat to our health and local environment. 41.7% felt it did not and 27% had no opinion The Quarry was felt to pose a threat through Its emission of dust, blasting. visual impact on the area, noise, traffic, radon gas, etc.
The majority of households were opposed to the siting of an Eircell Telecommunications Mast at Coronea and a Telecommunications mast at Castlopoles Reservoir. Alternative sites were given by households. 55% of households felt that telecommunications masts are a health hazard, whilst 36. 1 % felt they were an eyesore. 21% of respondents had no opinion.
Sports & Recreation in Cornafean
The mast popular indoor sports participated in by Cornafean Community households are Soccer, Keep fit and basketball
Suggestions for Improving Indoor sports in the area included, e.g. a sports complex, bowling, squash. Handball, Indoor soccer, snooker, badminton. Revamp existing hall/ community centre
The most popular outdoor sports participated in by households were. GAA football, golf, camogle, hunting and soccer
Suggestions given for improving outdoor sports in the Cornafean area included, e.g. outdoor pursuits, all-weather pitch, squash, badminton, soccer pitch, changing rooms for Ladies. Ladies football team, sports day. equestrian centre, sports tournament, playground and rounders
Main Social Activities in the Cornafean Area
18.8% of households participate in cards; 17.3% in Women’s Group; 17.3% in Vintage Ploughing: 14.4% in music. 14.4% in IFA; 9.4% in Community Alert; 6.9% Involved in Macra Na Feirme and 1.5% in other activities.
Social facilities for all age groups were thought to be reasonable.
Suggestions for improving social facilities included. e.g. local dram society, social events. teenage discos, table quiz, community centre. Mother and Toddler group, Over 60’s group, special interest groups, Age and Opportunity group, community spirit and sports co-ordinator
Education & Evening Classes
15.5% of households had Individuals who were participating in classes. They included computers, drama and dancing, etc.
Suggestions for the provision of evening classes; within Cornafean included computers, keep-fit, ham decoration and carpentry, etc.
Awareness of Cornafean Community Association
56% of households were unaware of Cornafean Community Association before the survey
suggestions for Cornafean Community Association to develop the area included e.g. fishing, computer facilities for farmers, walks, festival, children’s playground, enterprise centre. sports facilities. booklet on activities in the area, photography, craft centre, make people more aware of the area. follow-up to survey and wind generated electricity.
Cornafean Teenagers
of the households surveyed, them were 103 persons aged between 12-18.
Indoor sports participated in include snooker, pood. basketball. Indoor soccer and swimming Outdoor sports participated in include football, soccer, athletics, hockey, golf and horseriding. Many of those sports are provided outside the community.
35.3% of teenagers who completed the survey said that a member of their family participated in Foroige; 17.6% in dancing: 14.7% in drama, 14.7% in music; 8.8% in youth club and 8.8% in Scor.
62.3% of the teenagers felt that social facilities in the area for young people are poor. 34% felt they were reasonable. whilst 3.8% felt they were good.
Suggestions to improve social sporting facilities for teenagers included, e.g. a new community centre, more clubs, room provided especially for young people, new sports complex, renovate McSeain’s, renovate Drumcor school and Ladies football
Activities they would like to see in the area include. e.g. badminton, basketball, soccer, youth club, tennis court, inter-parish activities. Bowling, meeting place, table tennis ond organise transport to activities
Economic Issues
Develop tourism

Farming - to keep it going as it is/ will adapt to change
