Cornafean News 23 July 2002

Congratulations to Senator Diarmuid Wilson

The news last weekend of the election of local Councillor Diarmuid Wilson to Seanad Eireann has been warmly welcomed by his neighbours and friends in the locality. Diarmuid was elected to the Administrative panel of the Upper House of the Oireachtas on the 11th Count, defeating in the process a number of prominent figures, including long-serving Fianna Fail TD Michael Kitt and former Fine Gael TD Frances Fitzgerald.

His election is undoubtedly a major boost to the Cornafean, Crossdoney, Ballinagh and surrounding localities in indeed for the whole of County Cavan after the recent disappointments for the county in the national political sphere. A native of Blenacup, Diarmuid is a very popular and highly respected voluntary worker and public representive, and has a strong record of achievement and involvement in sporting and community sectors over the years. He was first elected to Cavan County Council in 1999 when he dramatically topped the poll in the Cavan electoral area and his achievement in achieving election to the Seanad last week, again on the first attempt, is apt recognition of both his personal popularity and his political talents.

We extend our heartiest congratulations to Diarmuid, together with his wife Marion and children, his mother Teresa, brothers, John and Philip and his sister Mary on this tremendous honour for Diarmiud and the entire Wilson family. Diarmuid, of course is a nephew of the esteemed former Tanaiste, Government Minister and Cavan football star, John P. Wilson, and it is fitting that Diarmuid is now set to continue in the footsteps of his esteemed uncle on the national political stage.

Key Championship Win

On last Saturday evening, the Cornafean footballers beat Lavey in their second game of the 2002 Cavan Crystal Intermediate Championship, with the final score reading Cornafean 0-15 Lavey 0-13.

After their disappointing display the previous weekend against Cootehill, Cornafean went into this game determined to made amends and they opened brightly, going into a six points lead in the early stages. Lavey battled hard to slowly bring themselves back into the game and there was just two points between the teams at half time on a scoreline of 0-8 to 0-6 in Cornafean's favour. It was nip and tuck for most of the second half with Lavey taking the lead at one stage but Cornafean responded well with three late points, including a wonder score from what seemed an impossibly acute angle from Liam Duignan, to win by a margin of two.

Next Sunday afternoon, Cornafean return to Kingspan Breffni Park to take on Denn in their final first round game. Denn have been one of the county's leading intermediate sides for several years and it is no small task for Cornafean to face such a strong outfit in the county headquarters. However, Cornafean always seem to produce an especially committed effort every time they play in the county grounds and if they replicate this committment on this occasion, they will stand a good chance of causing an upset.

The late Mr Sean McGahern

There was widespread sadness in the locality last weekend on the death of Sean McGahern, Drumloman, Kilnaleck and formerly of Coronea, who died on Friday 19th July in Cavan General Hospital.

A native of Coronea, Sean spent much of his working life in London before returning to live in Drumloman some time ago. He will be remembered as a decent, friendly and kind man, who was held in very high esteem by his many friends and neighbours.

There were large attendances at the Removal of her Remains to Coronea Church on last Sunday evening and at the Funeral Mass on Monday morning , with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Sally, daughter Maria, brother Michael sisters Kathleen and Teresa and other relatives.

Cornafean Notes 16-7-02

Kilmore Summer Barbeque this Friday Night

Kilmore Cathedral Parish are holding their annual Summer Barbeque in Kilmore Parochial Hall on this Friday night, 19th July from 8 o'clock onwards.

The evenings proceedings will start at 7pm with a Car Treasure Hunt, which starts from the Hall. There will be dancing to music by Brian & Geraldine from 11pm until 1am.

This event has for several years been extremely popular and well-supported with many hundreds of people gathering each year for a feast of fine food and entertainment. With the much-anticipated improvement in our weather in recent days, many people are especially looking forward to an enjoyable evening on Friday. Admission, which includes a meal, is a very reasonable 10 euro for adults and 5 euro for children, and tickets can be purchased in advance from local sources.

Championship Defeat

The Cornafean footballers opened their 2002 Cavan Crystal Intermediate Championship campaign on a disappointing note when they were beaten by Cootehill, on a scoreline of 3-8 to 0-9.

A large attendance gathered in Max McGrath Park, Redhills on a fine summer evening for the game. From the outset, it was obvious that Cootehill were in top form and they quickly imposed themselves on the game with two first-half goals, which left Cornafean reeling, with the locals trailing by 2-5 to 0-3 at the break .

To Cornafean’s credit they produced a storming performance in the second half to fight their way back into contention, and when Championship debutant Liam Duignan scored a great point twenty minutes after the restart, there was only four points between the teams and an upset looked likely. However, Cootehill were not finished yet, and when the Celtics scored a third goal against the run of play with eight minutes left, their victory was assured.

Cornafean play their second Championship game this weekend when they face Lavey at the Ballinagh venue. This promises to be an entertaining game between two evenly-matched teams, who together topped the table in the recently completed league stages of the Lakeside Manor Division 3 league. Twelve months ago, Lavey and Cornafean played out a dramatic drawn game in the Championship, when Cornafean produced three late goals to lead by a point as the game neared its end only for Lavey to snatch a last-gasp equaliser.

At the time of writing, the timing of this weekend’s game has not been definitively confirmed but it is understood that it will take place on Saturday evening at 8.00pm. We wish the Cornafean lads every success in this game.

Robbery overshadows Game

After all the excitement of a thrilling and sporting Championship game in Redhills on Saturday evening, the occasion was soured by the theft of significant sums of money from both teams’ dressingrooms during the game. The theft was only discovered as both teams returned to their respective dressingrooms after the conclusion of the game, and it is understood that varying sums of cash were stolen from the clothing of a number of players from both Cornafean and Cootehill. This unfortunate incident is yet another sad reminder of the low standards of the times in which we live, it is a reminder to us all that it is important to be vigilant at all times. If anyone has any information which may be useful in bringing to justice the perpetrators of this crime, they are asked to contact the Gardai at Redhills or at any Garda station.

The late Mrs Veronica O’Reilly

There was widespread sadness in the locality last weekend on the death of Mrs Veronica (Vera) O’Reilly, Farnadolly, Crossdoney and late of Marahill, who died after a long illness on Thursday 11th July.

Vera will be remembered as a very decent, kind and generous lady, an a person of very strong religious faith and devotion. She was a very active campaigner and fundraiser for religious and charitable causes and she played a huge role in the fundraising effort which enabled the restoration of St. Patrick’s Church Drumcor in the early 1990’s. For many years, she regularly attended Whist Drives in various local centres, a pastime which she greatly enjoyed.

There were large attendances at the Removal of her Remains to Drumcor Church on Saturday evening last and at the Funeral Mass on Sunday morning , with burial in the adjoining cemetery. Deepest sympathy is extended to her husband John, daughter Anne-Marie, son-in-law John, grandchildren John, Michael, Kevin and Christopher, brother, sisters and other relatives.

Cornafean News 9th July 2002

The late Mrs. Ailbhe Hannon-Dunne

The tragic and unexpected death of Mrs. Ailbhe Hannon-Dunne, Clontarf, Dublin and formerly of Farranseer House, Cornafean has been met with widespread shock and grief in her native Cornafean and further afield. Her death took place on last Monday evening, 8th July, in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin after a short illness. Aged just 25 years, she was the eldest daughter of Jim and Maura Hannon, and wife of Kerrill Dunne.

Ailbhe will be remembered as a warm, friendly, gentle and deeply spiritual person, who was greatly loved by her wide circle of friends and acquaintances. She was a person of great intellect and ability with a tremendous record of academic achievement, which culminated in her being awarded an M.A. Degree by University College Dublin less than a year before her death. She was also the holder of a Diploma in Social Services from the same university.

Ailbhe had earlier been educated in Lacken National School and Loreto College, Cavan. While studying in UCD, she met her future husband, Kerrill and they were married in Coronea Church in October 2000. Up to the time of her death, she worked as a language instructor in a third-level College in Dublin City Centre. In the course of her work, she displayed admirable qualities of kindness and selfless generosity in attending conscientiously to the needs of her students.

She was an enthusiastic and dedicated member of Co. Cavan Pony Club and represented the club with distinction in Show Jumping, Hunter Trials and Horse Trials. She had also a keen interest in international travel and she greatly enjoyed travelling to many foreign lands with her husband Kerrill. However, no matter how far she travelled, Ailbhe always maintained a special fondness for her own home in Farrinseer and in the surrounding locality in Cornafean, and she always made a point of keeping closely in touch with her family and friends and the various happenings in the locality.

She will be deeply missed by her heartbroken husband Kerrill, parents Jim and Maura, brother Aonghus, sisters Aidín and Assumpta and her other relatives, to whom we extend heartfelt sympathy on their sad bereavement.

To mark his achievement, Mrs. Claire Ryan, Principal made a special presentation to Brian of a Newbridge Silver pen and holder when the school term ended at the end of last month.

Brian is a son of Sean and Mary Duignan, Shancor and we extend congratulations to Brian and his family on his achievement.

Dessie & Bob hit the Road Again

Following the successful conclusion of his month-long “Malin to Mizen” journey via horse and cart last month, in aid of Self Help Third World development, Dessie Harrington is once again taking to the roads with his trusty steed Bob next Saturday evening, when he will visit Carrigallen and Arva. A number of community representatives in both towns had invited Dessie to visit during his long journey last month but due to pressure of time it was decided to schedule his visit after the “Malin to Mizen” journey had concluded.

Dessie and Bob will be arriving in Carrigallen at 9.00pm on this Saturday evening and from there they will progress to Arva, where they are expected to arrive at 10.15pm. They will be led into both towns by the renowned marching piper Sean Kelly.

Meanwhile, we are pleased to report that Francie Reilly, Doogarry, who composed the song “The Cornafean Cob” in honour of Dessie’s horse Bob, expects that the song will be recorded and made available for commercial release later this year.

Footballers’ Derby win

Local football enthusiasts were treated to an entertaining derby game on last Tuesday evening in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain with the meeting of Cornafean and Arva in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 League. As usual in these contests there was never much between the sides and a first-half goal from Thanasie Kaldanis turned out to be the decisive score for Cornafean as they finished winners on a 1-9 to 0-9 scoreline.

This win concludes a satisfactory campaign for Cornafean in the round-robin stages of the league, when they won nine games and drew another in eleven outings, to finish in second place in the league table, with a total of 19 league points.

Championship Opener

Next Saturday evening, all roads will lead to Max McGrath Park, Redhills  for the meeting of Cornafean and Cootehill in the Cavan Crystal Intermediate Championship. After their strong run in the league, Cornafean will be hoping to repeat their good form in the Championship but they will have it all to do in a tough league group, where they will face Denn, Lavey and Saturday’s opponents Cootehill.

The last meeting of these sides in the Intermediate Championship was in 1998 when Cootehill emerged victorious in a low-scoring relegation play-off encounter, played in Terry Coyle Park. Four years earlier, the teams produced a memorable game in the 1994 Intermediate Championship semi-final in Breffni Park with a strong second-half rally that day earning Cornafean an appearance in the Championship final.

We wish the local lads all the best of luck on Saturday evening. The throw-in is scheduled for 8.00pm.

Golf Classic

The annual Cornafean GAA Golf Classic will be held on Saturday 3rd August in Cornafean Golf Course. This has been a very popular event in recent years and already there has been great interest in this year's Classic.

The proceeds of the Golf Classic will be in aid of the new sports hall development at the club grounds in Cornafean, which is currently in the course of construction. The organisers are hoping from a great response from individuals, businesses and companies, who are being invited to enter a team or contribute sponsorship towards the event.

Kilmore Summer Barbeque

The annual Kilmore Cathedral Parish Summer Barbeque will be held in Kilmore Parochial Hall on next Friday week, 19th July from 8 o'clock onwards.

The evenings proceedings will start at 7pm with a Car Treasure Hunt, which starts from the Hall. There will be dancing to music by Brian & Geraldine from 11pm until 1am.

Cornafean News 3rd July 2002

Congratulations Dessie!

Congratulations to Dessie Harrington, Drumkeeran on his achievement in completing his epic “Malin to Mizen” journey by horse and cart throughout the highways and byways of Ireland, to raise funds for the Self-Help Third World development charity. Dessie’s incredible itinerary, started at the most northerly point of Ireland at Malin Head, Co. Donegal on Friday 30th May and over the course of the month of June he, and his horse Bob, travelled south through the country before reaching the most southern extremity of the island at Mizen Head, Co. Cork. Dessie’s journey captured the imagination of people in all areas on his route through the country and he was literally overwhelmed by the hospitality and generosity of everyone he met. On Monday night last, many hundreds of well-wishers and friends gathered in Cornafean to officially welcome Dessie on his return after his month-long expedition.

Football Win

The Cornafean footballers had Mountnugent as visitors to Pairc Naoimh Fionnain on Saturday evening last for their meeting in the Lakeside Manor Division 3 League. Cornafean finished on top after a tightly-contested game, on a scoreline of 1-10 to 1-7. The clinching score for Cornafean came midway through the first half when Thanasie Kaldanis scored an opportunist goal and this helped the home side to lead by 1-6 to 1-5 at the break. Cornafean were under pressure for much of the second half but their defence worked hard to contain the visitors’ threat and the locals held on to win by three points.

Cornafean now have 17 league points from ten games, in advance of their final round-robin league fixture against neighbours Arva. In the coming weeks, attention will be turning to the opening rounds of the Cavan Crystal Intermediate Championship which is due to start on the weekend of 12-14 July. Cornafean will be hoping to carry their strong league form into the Championship but they will be well aware that league form rarely counts for much in the much more competitive environment of Championship football.

Golf Classic

Cornafean GFC are holding their annual Golf Classic on Saturday 3rd August in Cornafean Golf Course. This has been a very popular event in recent years and this year's Classic promises to be as equally successful and enjoyable.

The proceeds of the Golf Classic will be in aid of the new sports hall development at the club grounds in Cornafean, which is currently in the course of construction.  While the club has obtained some government  funding for the project, there still is a need to raise a substantial amount of money  to allow the project to be completed.

The organisers are hoping from a great response from individuals, businesses and companies, who are being  invited to enter a team or contribute sponsorship towards the event.

The cost per team of four is €60 to include light refreshments. Attractive prizes will be on offer to the winning teams. Tees and Greens can be sponsored. Sponsors will be posted on the Tees and Greens and will be publicly acknowledged  and displayed  on our community website www.cornafean.com. A Time Sheet will be in operation on the day and teams may be entered by telephone to Dominic King, Drumcrow,  (049 4337415) / (087 269 6918) or to Padraig Cosgrove, Corlismore  (049 4337094)
