Cornafean Notes 7 September 2004

Charity 15km Walk for Hospice

On Saturday 18th September, the Cornafean Gallant 15km Challenge Walk will take place in aid of St Christopher’s Hospice, Cavan. The walk is being organised by Cornafean GAA club. The walk will leave the Cathedral in Cavan town at 2pm on that day, and will proceed to Cornafean via Ballinagh and Crossdoney. There has been a tremendous public response so far to this fundraising project and a large number of people are expected to walk, jog or run the 15km distance.

Sponsorship forms are available from various outlets including St Christophers Hospice, from House of Fabric, John McMahon newsagent, Annalee Boutique and from Ciaran Weir, Padraig Cosgrove, Paddy McDermott and other committee members.

Successful Ploughing Day

The Annual Vintage Ploughing and Field Day was held in Cornafean on the last Saturday in August, attracting a large attendance. A good day was had by all and happily the weather remained dry and warm for the entire afternoon. A presentation of the proceeds of €5,000 was made to the Self Help third world charity at the Vintage Dance in Cornafean later that evening.

Ms Anne McGibney

The death of Anne McGibney, Corlis, which took place on Monday 26th July brought great sadness and grief to her many friends and to the entire local community. Anne, who was 29 years old, was a very popular figure in the locality and played a very active part in local life. She was especially known for her kindness to the elderly and those experiencing illness. Anne was an enthusiastic follower of Scor and local sports. She played camogie with Cornafean and twice represented Cornafean, Cavan and Ulster in the All Ireland finals in Scor na nOg, in the Question Time and Novelty Act competitions respectively.

Anne worked in Dublin as an official with the Revenue Commissioners, and in recent years she had achieved promotion a number of times within the Revenue. Prior to joining the Revenue, she had worked in number of civil service departments.

There were large attendances at the removal of her remains to St Brigid’s Church, Killeshandra on Wednesday 28th July and at her Funeral Mass on the following day, with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

We express our heartfelt sympathy to her parents William and Teresa, brothers Tommy, Jimmy, Michael and Teresa, sisters in law, aunts, uncles cousins and other relatives.

Mr Frank Harkness

There was deep sadness in the locality recently on the death of Frank Harkness, Drumcoghill, who died suddenly on August 4th. Frank who was in his seventies was a well known local farmer. A very decent, obliging man, he will be greatly missed by the entire community. He was predeceased by his wife Annie. His Funeral Service was held in Ballintemple Parish Church on Saturday August 7th, with a large attendance present. We extend our deepest sympathy to his step-daughters Isobel and Alberta, sisters, brother, nephews, nieces and other relatives.

Mrs Ann Mary O’Reilly

The sudden and unexpected death of Mrs Ann Mary O’Reilly (nee McIntyre), Drumbess on August 21st last was deeply mourned by the entire local community. Aged 82, and the wife of the late Joe, she was renowned for her gentle, warm and kind nature. Happily, she remained extremely active and in good health right up until the time of her death.

We extend our deepest sympathy to her sons Seamus and Liam, daughter Mrs Angela Geoghegan, brother Larry, sisters Mrs Katie Kelly, Mrs Betty Meehan and Mrs Brigid McCaffrey.

There were large attendances at the Removal of her remains to Coronea Church on Sunday August 22nd and at her Funeral on Monday with burial in the adjoining cemetery.

Active Age Club

Best wishes to the Cornafean Active Age Group who visit Manchester and the surrounding region on a tour this weekend. Hopefully everyone will enjoy a fantastic trip.

Championship Match Drawn

A large crowd was in Pairc Naoimh Fionnain last Saturday for the eagerly-anticipated meeting of Mullahoran and Crosserlough in the quarter-final of the Hotel Kilmore Senior Championship. The game was a tight one with the sides finishing level on nine points apiece. Meanwhile we wish every success to the Cornafean side who take on Laragh United this weekend in the Intermediate Championship relegation playoff. Curiously this game is a repeat of the Intermediate Final of ten years ago when Laragh beat Cornafean by 0-15 to 2-6. Among the stars for Laragh that day were county players John Brady and Patrick Shiels, and prominent for Cornafean were men such as Johnny Masterson, Damien McCaffrey and Peadar McKiernan, the latter who unfortunately suffered a broken leg as the game neared its end. While much has changed in both teams since the heady days of September 1994, this weekend’s playoff should be an entertaining encounter, and hopefully Cornafean will get the rub of the green that has eluded them in a number of recent fixtures.

Vintage Tractor Club

An important meeting of the local Vintage Tractor Club in Cornafean will be held in McSeains on this Friday night at 9.30pm. All ticket sellers and members are asked to attend.

Sympathy

Sincere sympathy is extended to Mrs Kathleen Goldrick, Drumora on the death of her brother Peter Reilly, Loughduff, whose funeral took place in Loughduff last Sunday.

90th Birthday

Congratulations to Phil Sheridan, Killeshandra and formerly of Drumcullion, who celebrated his 90th birthday with family and friends in the Loughbawn Hotel, Killeshandra on last Saturday night. A very successful footballer in his day with Cornafean, Phil still avidly follows the fortunes of the Reds, and lives a very active life. We wish him continued happiness and good health in the future.

Cornafean Notes 24 August 04

Cornafean Vintage Day this Saturday

The annual Cornafean Vintage Ploughing and Field Day will be held on next Saturday next, 28th August in Cornafean. The local Vintage Day has been for many years one of the most popular events in the annual calendar and this year promises to be no different. The day's proceedings will start at 1pm and a tremendous variety of attractions will be on display for the day.

In recent weeks the Vintage Association have been busy putting the finishing touches to the preparations for the event and they are hoping for a record attendance on the day. With schools reopening next week, the Cornafean Vintage Day is traditionally a wonderful family outing and  as usual, many of this year’s attractions will appeal especially to children.

As in previous years, there will be keen interest in the various ploughing exhibitions, including Horse Ploughing, Vintage Tractor ploughing, and demonstrations of mule and jennet ploughing.

There will also be exhibitions of many other agricultural activities of a bygone era, including threshing, vintage baling, saddling, stone masonry and loy digging, and demonstrations of many traditional household tasks, such as baking, churning, and butter making. There will also be displays of vintage cars, trucks, and engines. A number of trade stands will be in place for the day and several food stands will provide refreshments.

The event promises to be a wonderful day out for children and families. As was the case in earlier years, children of all ages will enjoy numerous special attractions such as children’s races, bouncing castles, a Dog Show with prizes sponsored by Erne Motors, Cavan, the ever-popular Mini Quads, amusements, a fortune teller and stilt walker.

All proceeds from the event are in aid of "Self Help", the Third World Development Charity. This charity was set up in response to the Ethiopian famine in the mid-1980's and since then has been doing great work in the in the third world, concentrating on long-term famine prevention through training and education.

The day's proceedings will conclude with the ever-popular Annual Vintage Dance in McSeain's on Saturday night with dancing to Brian & Geraldine.
